Love the self sharpening!
These are great knives. The fact that they get sharpened everytime you use them is awesome. So far they seem to be working great. There is a nice variety of sizes for the prep knives, along with the steak knives and shears. This is a great set for any household. Great for a gift with the holidays coming up.Things that make this a step above similar sets is the fact that the knives are full tang design. This means the metal goes all the way through the handles. For a sturdier knife as well as better longevity, full tang is the best design in general. And the handles have a nice, almost tacky feeling so they do not get slippery at all.I have bought similar sets as gifts recently, and these are far superior to the other ones I have seen. I would highly recommend these for personal use or as any type of gift!

nice set of knives for my big girl kitchen
This is such a nice gift for someone or even yourself. I really like how it gives the basics of what a decent home chef needs and a sharpener in the same piece. I don't know if I love seeing the names of each knife on the butt end, but it does help a lot as you're getting used to which knife does what. They are already pretty sharp and I haven't yet needed to sharpen the knives but I am sure it will do a good job. The wood block with the stainless cover on the specialty knives looks very nice on my counter. I only would say that you should learn the angle at which to insert the knives so you don't surprise yourself / hurt yourself if you're not being careful.

Very Sharp and High Quality
I am always on the lookout for high quality kitchen knives. My old set was very well made and pretty expensive, but they got dull and I wasn't able to get their edge back no matter how hard I tried. A problem with this was that I didn't take the time to keep them sharp regularly, so eventually they became too dull for my skill in sharpening to work anymore. This takes that problem away. Every time you are done using your knives they slide across a stone to sharpen them and return the edge. This is such a convenient feature for a knife block, and I love it. This set has completely spoiled me, I don't know that I'll ever be able to go back to a normal set after this. The blades themselves are very well made and thick/sharp metal. They are not going to break down or have any issues, and they have a great edge on them right out of the box. I don't have any complaints about this set. It looks excellent on the counter and the knives are all very high quality, I love it. I highly recommend this set to anyone needing a nice knife block.

Very functional and sharp set of knives
I'm not really a chef but having a great set of knives is always important for the kitchen for normal prep. This set of knives, really the knife block, is unique because of its built-in sharpners in the block itself. The block looks great and is highly functional. The knife set covers most of the needs in the kitchen - a very large chef knife, a smaller but light santouka knife, and other supporting functional knives. This is the first time I've seen knives labelled on the end, so you can tell which knife when it's in the block. The steak knives are lightweight but have great serration and feels very strong. My only complaint is that the handles are plastic, rather than wood, for the aesthetics. To me the knives seem pretty sharp - I was able to cut through tough skin that my previous knife had trouble with. The knives seem well balanced and the handles feel good in the hand. Even though the knife block says they are sharpeners, technically they hone the knives and the knives still need a sharpener if it gets really dull. However for everyday use, the honing in the block should keep the edge pretty sharp, so I would say it is useful to have this block with its built-in honers. The set is pretty high priced, but it's a known brand and the functional block is a highlight. You'll have to decide whether it's worth it to you.

Great knife set, integrated sharpeners
This is set of high quality knifes from a reputable brand and it does not disappoint. Knifes have a good feel to them, nicely weighted and sharp. The wooden block is elegant. A great feature is the sharpening slots. So no need to sharpen the knifes manually which can be annoying and no worries about the knifes turning dull

Good
Decent set of knives. They're comfortable to hold and nicely weighted. The blades are sharp. Not a fan off the plastic handles on the steak knives. These aren't high end but that detail still seems really cheap to me. Nice size variety. I think the price might be mostly due to the sharpening knife block. Neat idea, but I can't rate how it works since I didn't keep it. So that didn't effect my stars. My husband sharpens my knives and that block is HUGE and ugly. No way i was taking up so much space with that thing. Knives are decent.

Worth EVERY Penny
It is hard to understand why expensive knives are worth it until you have actually used a set of high quality knives. This is a great starting point for anyone wanting to see the difference. These knives are worth every penny. They're sharp, cut like butter, and they're easy to clean. They look phenomenal on the counter, which is an added bonus.

Excellent knife set. Nice and sharp. Love the self-sharpener and Calphalon name.
First of all, this knife set is from Calphalon, which is obviously a quality trusted brand. You get 8 serrated steak knives, five other larger cutting / carving / utility knives, a set of shears, and finally the knife block. All cut very nicely and have a good feel to them. I like that the wood block has built-in sharpeners for four of the five other (non-serrated) knives; it takes a bit of practice to insert the knives such that the entire blade runs through the sharpener, but time and repetition takes care of that "issue". A super handy feature is that the five other (non-steak) knives all have the name of what each is clearly printed on the end of the handle, which facilitates knowing which knife you have, and also makes it easier to ensure each goes back in its correct slot. At a bit over $200 for the set it's not for the faint of heart financially. But, a good set of knives like this that will last for years is an investment that will pay off in the long run.
