Hell in Japanese Art Review: Solid Artbook - Phenomenal Illustrations w/ a great inclusion on some excepts from the Oyojoshu. Would recommend to any art enthusiast and those interested in Pure-Land Buddhism mythos + imagery Review: Cool book and great addition to a collection - This is a great book. I have a bunch of books of art from various ukiyo-e artists mostly from the 19th century. A lot of the art in this book is from a few hundred years earlier which is nice. There are some descriptions of how Hell fits into the mythology and some descriptions of the various pieces. The book itself has a nice hefty feel to it without being hard to handle. At times there is very little describing the origin of the art but I get the impression this is a limitation of the art not the book. Another quibble is that some of the art is across the spine of the book which can mar the image. This is common for books like this and on the whole its ok here. This book also makes use of showing an image and then a variety of zoomed in portions. Sometimes this is done too much and unnecessarily. In this book they do a very good job of making use of that. Overall I think this is a great addition to the collection and does not overlap too much with books reviewing the collections of the to ukiyo-e artists. Valuewise I think its pretty fair given the amount of art and overall quality.

Fantastic book!
This is a great book and tons of fantastic images. In art books like this, I normally have a tendency to ignore things like the preface or any long stretches of text, but I found myself engrossed in even the preface of this book. To be clear it's almost entirely artwork, but I find the text that is there to be engaging and interesting (as opposed to the self-important, pedantic twaddle that comes in so many art books). This is an outstanding, fascinating tome.

This is a great by for people who love mythology, folk & fairytales. Also, for people who want to investigate Japanese religious themes of this nature. Great artworks and a bumper book that'll provide hours/weeks/months of pleasure.

Großartige Zusammenstellung von Bildern. Was für eine unglaublich Phantasie der Maler und Zeichner. Man versteht Japan wieder ein bisschen besser.
