Carving Patterns by Frank C. Russell: from the Stonegate Woodcarving School: Birds, Animals, Fish (Schiffer Book for Carvers)

Great book for getting your feet wet in animal carving. While not a beginner's book it does have information that can be used to develop carving skills quickly. Very detailed drawings and good tips on how to get certain details exactly right. If your a beginner, don't let that level of detail intimidate you, carving is a life long growing process and this book helps set a good foundation.

The patterns are very well depicted

I'm an artist of 25 plus years with skills in drawing, painting, airbrush, some sculpting and very little in detailed carving. I chose this book to gain a strong baseline for carving. While the patterns in this book are nice they lack the detail needed for a beginner. There are no measurements or dimensional ratios that I could fine for any project in this book. The only photos of finished projects are on the cover and they're small. All of the patterns lack the beginning stages of carving, save one. Pages 74 - 76 is the only representation of how to begin your carving. It demonstrates this on one animal only; the Buck. I fully expected all patterns to contain the beginning stages and photos of the finished sculpture. Also, this book concentrates on birds more than any other animal. About 50 - 60 percent of it is on bird carving. I was looking for a good representation of many animals. This was very disappointing for me.So, if you have carved before, this book may be for you. Otherwise, you may want to consider another carving book. I will be sending this one back.

I have carved several of th animals so far and enjoyed doing so.

I was so please with the Carving Patterns by Mr. Russell, I felt the need to let other carvers know. The pages are clear, detailed,and very user friendly. The patterns and text were not convoluted with unnecessary instructions that tend to only confuse the beginning carver. As someone who began as a sketch artist before starting to carve, I can appreciate how much effort it actually takes not to over-blend, over-shade & leave the crisp lines for others to follow. I think both the beginning carver and the experienced carver will gain something useful from this book.

The clairity of the patterns are incredible,the details are so clear that a beginner could follow instructions. The book contains so many patterns that it id hard to make up ones mind as to which one pattern to start first.The book is far more than an education toolit actually breaks down different part of the carving for you.I would not hesitate to purchase further books from this publisher and aurther

Bonjour, je vient d'acheté ce livre.Pages papier glacé , couverture cartonné , motif uniquement en noir et blanc très peut d'explications, parfois un dessin pour donner le sens de sabots ou autres....Il est dommage qu'aucune présentation fini soit présenté, hormis sur la couverture. Il n'y à pas de pas à pas dans cette ouvrage, uniquement la planche motif.Ouvrage composé uniquement d'animaux, très intéressent pour des personnes qui savent déjà travailler le bois et sont capable de travailler juste avec le motif de base. Le livre comprend : de la page 11 à 65 des oiseaux , puis 11 motifs animaux sauvage et enfin 4 ou 5 poissons.Personnellement je travail le bois depuis plusieurs années donc pour moi qui aime réalisée les animaux je suis pleinement satisfaite.Pour les débutants cette ouvrage me paraît trop difficile , il vaut mieux choisir des livres avec beaucoup plus d'explications et des pas à pas, par contre si vous êtes certain du choix de votre hobby , vous pouvez toujours prendre cette ouvrage pour plus tard.Cordialement Sandrine
