Q: what is the cost for the subscription? and is ready to record or have to buy a hard drive before use it?

I do not subscribe so I pay nothing per month. I signed up for PLEX a few years ago and paid about $100 for a lifetime membership. I use PLEX to control the DVR which is connected directly to my network via an ethernet cable. The DVR records directly to a hard drive also connected to my home network but the drive is not in the same room with the DVR as I put my DVR in one of the only two air conditioned rooms in my house to keep it cool. (It seems to do better when cool vs overheated) I have connected my attic mounted antennas to it via a coaxial cable. It picks up between 34 & 55 stations depending on atmospheric conditions. It is possible to connect either a thumb drive or a USB hard drive directly to the DVR.

Q: 1) can i purchase this item, hook it to my antenna in attic and view channels on my samsung tvs? 2) i don't record! 3) can you recommend an antenna?

1) As long as your Samsung TVs have the HD Home Run app (or you have a streaming device connected with the HD Home Run App), then yes . . . You’ll be able to watch live antenna on your Samsung TVs with this connected to your antenna. 3) There are tons of antenna options. Personally, I went with the GE long range Attic Antenna, and I’ve had nothing but positive results.

Q: Can i download the recorded files? i used tivo to go and got used to transferring my recordings to the laptop when i travel.

Yes - recorded file are accessible from the device webpage and can be saved locally using a web browser.

Q: Does this work for Samsung tvs?

It will work on newer Samsung TVs however there's a catch. The associated HD HomeRun app is not available for newer (not sure about older) Samsung TVs. The newer Samsungs will play content from this device but with it's own software. And in my opinion the Samsung software isn't very good. There's no channel guide and no way to use the DVR feature. At least not that I can tell.
