Steinel HG3002 LCD...A True Professional Heat Gun...
The Steinel HG 3002 LCD is a stalwart among professional heat guns. Preferred by contractors for years. It's really grand that a few are still available since Steinel quit making them in 2006 in favor of their new totally electronic line.I prefer the HG 3002 for it's manual and very quick to set variable temp. rear dial and the manual and equally as quick to set variable fan speed wheel on the front of the handle. The LCD on the top shows both the temperature setting right after you set it and then the actual temp as it increases or decreases from the previous setting. Some of newer electronic units only show the temp. setting with arrows to indicate when that setting is reached, not showing the actual temp. as it changes. I admit to being a little old school so the newer totally electronic and programmable units are just more than I require. And actually slower to set in some cases. After a few jobs I memorize the heat and fan settings anyway so the HG 3002 is just fine. One of the finest features of the HG 3002 and all Steinel higher end heat guns for that matter is the thermocouple in the head that keeps the temperature constant with the setting no matter how much air is passing through. This function is totally necessary when changing nozzle sizes or fan speeds which totally changes the air flow but never the actual temperature because of the thermocouple in the heating head. If you are doing any type of heating which requires a specific and constant temperature, this thermocouple function is absolutely mandatory.I didn't realize it but most of the higher end Milwaukee, Bosch, Craftsmen and some others all have Steinel internal components. That pretty much says it all on what the entire industry thinks of Steinel.Get this classic and truly professional heat gun for a great price before they are totally gone.kd

Poorly designed dial
The temperature dial is very poorly designed. The large dial is connected to the gun by a very flimsy plastic rod. This rod has broken numerous times over the years. I keep having to epoxy it, but repairs don't last because there is just to much leverage from the dial to the rod. Therefore, the gun tends to get stuck on a temperature until I can take it apart and fix it. Otherwise, it's been a good gun.

Steinel Heat Gun good enough for amateur roofing work
I am building a house and decided to use PVC membrane roofing on part of it. This type of roofing needs to have the seams welded together using a hot-air heat gun. I looked at the brands/models that professionals use and thought them to be way too expensive at over $400. This Steinel heat gun said it put out the same temperature and airflow as the expensive brands but was only about $150. It is really a general purpose heat gun primarily intended for welding and shaping Plexiglass for hobby (I guess). It worked okay on the roofing and I got the job done, but I am rating it 4 stars because of a couple of minor items. For one, I had to buy a different nozzle than the ones it came with in order to do roof membrane welding (that's not the gripe because I knew I would have to up front). I bought a "universal" nozzle that was supposed to fit "most" heat guns. It did not fit the Steinel (that's the gripe) and I had to make extensive modifications to the nozzle and use a hose clamp to make it work with this heat gun. I guess that's not really Steinel's problem but if they are going to make a heat gun, it would be nice to make them to fit "universal" nozzles that fit most everyone else's heat guns of the same basic type.Features that I did like were that the temperature is continuously controllable up to 1100 degrees Fahrenheit with the turn of a dial. The digital readout on top of the gun tells you what your setting is and then automatically switches over to tell you what the actual temperature is. There is also a dial to adjust the airflow on the front of the pistol grip handle. The airflow dial was my other minor complaint in that it has no detent and turns so easily that normal handling of the gun kept accidently turning the air flow down. It needs to have more friction or some kind of detents to keep it where you set it. But overall, it did the job with just those two minor inconveniences. Were I to do things all over again, I would still buy this gun because of the huge cost savings over the "roofing only" type of heat gun, dispite the two minor inconveniences. I would NOT recommend it for professional roofing though.

had 6 of these over the past 15 years they all still work
I started working with this, 15 years ago, over the years my company expanded and we bought 4 more units and to this day they all continue to work flawlessly, it is unfortunate that they have discontinued this product as its replacement does not seem to be the same quality and features as this one so I bought another for my personal use and expect to get many decades of good use out of it.
