U can open it!
It's simply a matter of knowing where to look. Had to take mine completely apart to discover such a simple little indicator. On the left side when you are looking at the logo Twist n Sharp, there is little arrow pointing up to show you the spot to pull the door open. Otherwise, works exactly like it is supposed to, and Yes, you can open it to remove the shavings. Was even able to snap all the pieces back together again. Love it.

Wish i had ordered these before I ordered another pricier pencil sharpener that doesn’t even work!!! Ugh. These work just fine, are sturdy and cute to match.

Different color than ordered
The product itself is great. My daughter REALLY wanted the blue and when placing an order through Amazon I would expect to get what I ordered. There were two pink/red shades and no blue.
