I tried this several times, and was not thrilled by it.
If you have arthritis or carpal tunnel issues that prevent you from whisking your usucha/traditional hot matcha, this may be an option, but so is putting your matcha and hot water in a jar and shaking it. I tried this several times, and was not thrilled by it. From the get go, my usual bamboo whisk/chasen did not fit. This only holds smaller diameter bamboo whisks, it would be better, and make more sense if the opening was bigger, to fit a larger variation of bamboo sizes, as they vary widely. The directions are printed on the bottom of the box, so at first I thought there weren't any. They are pretty bare bones at best anyway. It was a struggle to get a new whisk to fit, and took several attempts to get it both centered, and in snugly, even using the single provided wide rubber-band. If you have arthritis or carpal tunnel you will need assistance. As for splash proof, that only applies to the lowest speed. Both medium and high were wildly inappropriate for blending matcha. Even using this device in the usual "M or W or Z" pattern it left a foam-less/crema-less hole in the center of the chawan/bowl of matcha. If you belong to the "Lake School" of matcha this is great...Usually matcha is whisked so that a froth covers the whole surface. An area without froth is poetically called a lake. The Ura-senke school likes to froth it up completely, whereas the Omote-senke school leaves the lake so that the guest can see the color of the matcha underneath. Also this device beats the matcha to death. Some matchas also seem to benefit from less whisking: apparently the tea gets more bitter with more whisking as the leaves' essence is released. I found that out with this mixer. All In all I was not happy with it for traditional matcha, and will continue to make it by hand, where I get much better results 100% of the time.
