Do NOT use on breakable egg cups!
I could not figure out how this thing worked based on the description and the reviews, but I was sick of cutting the tops off my soft boiled eggs, which usually resulted in pieces of shell in the egg. I found that this little gadget works GREAT! So this is how the thing works: The outer rim of the cracker is somewhat sharp and scores the egg shell. By pulling back the plunger and letting go, you are basically just "tapping" the cracker onto the egg, and scoring the shell. I found it works best to do the plunger thing 2-3 times in a row without removing the egg from the cracker in between plunges. This way, it scores in the exact same place each time. After the last plunge, I twist the cracker back and forth until the shell snaps off. Super easy and you are left with a nice clean cut without lots of tiny broken egg shell pieces like you get when you cut the egg with a knife. Some reviews say to use this on the wide side of the egg, but I found it works just great on the narrow side. I used eggs from my local farmer's market, which tend to be large/extra large size. WARNING: Even tho the plunger only makes contact with the egg, and not the egg cup, it *will* shatter a breakable egg cup, even a very thick sturdy one (I found out the hard way). Now...my next challenge is to figure out what else I can do with this little gadget, because I hate having "unitaskers" in my kitchen. In this case, however, I feel an exception to that rule is well warranted.

Had to have this gadget!
We love European hard boiled eggs, where you cut the top of a boiled egg off, and spoon out the insides. This has sometimes come at the cost of an accidental cut or two. Saw this gadget in a reel and had to find it. Works surprisingly well! The egg stands fit all sizes of eggs, are not too deep, just right. The spoons are perfect for getting all the eggy goodness out of the shells. It’s a Yes from me. :)

Decent system, but not totally reliable to cleanly top boiled eggs.
The spring loaded egg topper! Growing up I had used one of the clamp type openers with the little jagged teeth that clenched the egg top and cracked it open and fast forward, we now have this Espare unit. I didn't really need the spoons or the holders, but they are there, and okay in quality. The holders are fair, thin steel, spot welded affairs. The main item is the spring loaded egg cracker topper. And so, after 'topping' several dozen eggs over the last few weeks. The short conclusion: It's more hit and miss. I found it best to hold the egg in a paper towel or napkin (assuming it's hot from the steamer) and with one hand gripping egg and the bell of the topper, let fly the spring mechanism and more often than not you'll end up with a decent seam. Sometimes, at this point, you can actually lift off the top of the egg entirely. More often, you're left with a crack seam and some radiating cracks, from which you can pick the top and other bits of shell off manually, leaving you with a undisturbed bottom 3/4 of the egg/shell. Either outcome is workable. You can't reliable top every egg, and don't expect to drop the egg in the egg cup and pop it open with perfect edges. Depending on several factors (egg shell strength, size, etc.) the topper sometimes just crushes the egg into the egg cup. So that's usually best avoided by using the handheld method. I'm going to buy one of the clampers with teeth as well, to see which is more reliable.

Great for poached eggs
Works great for poached eggs. I like to dip my toast in the yolk.

Cracker and spoons are fine, but the egg cups are awful.
Eggs and soldiers are one of my favorite breakfasts, so I decided to pick up this set to make the process a little easier. The cracking device works pretty well - just pull the handle and let it snap back a couple times, then rotate it 2-3 times and take it off by tilting it to the side (when I removed it by pulling it upwards, the cut egg top stayed on, and I had to peel it myself). The little spoons are also handy - just the right size for scooping out the inside of the egg once you’ve finished most of the yolk. My problem is with the egg cups, which have two major flaws. First, they rust very quickly and easily. My first one started to rust after only one use (and I’d cleaned and dried it immediately after using it, so it’s not like it was sitting in moisture for ages), and after one more use, the second one is rusting, too. Second, the shape of the egg cups leaves a horizontal groove around the middle that is difficult to clean. I’m inclined to buy a nicer set of egg cups and keep using the cracker and spoons from this set, although based on other reviews, it sounds like if I do that, I’ll need to crack the eggs and then place them into the cups (to avoid breaking the ceramic cups). In light of that, though, I’m not sure this set is worth the $16 price tag.

super!
Love the set. I saw couple reviewers complaining about flimsiness of the egg cups. I would say in response - if you want the same quality you see in Nambe brand, prepare to pay Nambe range price. This set provides just fantastic value for the price. It's nearly impossible to find just the egg cracker for under twenty dollars. And here you have the egg cracker, that cuts the top perfectly round (no need to describe the process, if you wonder how to use it just search youtube for the videos), perfectly sized cups, and very nice and solid contemporary shaped spoons. I tested it right after unpacking and was very pleased with my purchase. Sleek and modern, looks very nice in my kitchen, with bunch of accessories from Trudeau Bianca series (combo of white porcelaine with stainless steel). Just one note for those who love using dishwasher for everything: I would do the egg cracker by hand, so to make the mechanism and sharpness of the "teeth) last longer.

Doesn’t work!
This does not work. The cutter only crushes the eggshell and when you have the top off, the egg gets stuck in the cup. I didn’t save the packaging so I could return, so it went in the trash. Fail!

Great product, well designed and manufactured with quality materials. I had previously purchased another similar item but it very quickly became unusable as the weld failed. The epare is first class. Would definitely recommend for people who are heavy handed and crack eggs lol

I was so excited to use this, as I thought finally, a neat way to cut the top of a soft boiled egg. I have been using a sharp knife for years, and that did a fairly decent job, but usually there were a few small pieces shell in the egg, and I had to pick them out. The first time I used this, it didn't work, and wouldn't cut the shell. When I really looked at the pictorial instructions, I knew I wasn't doing it right. You have to pull up the little knob, then let it go. As it goes down, on its own, it does a good job of cutting the shell. It's a really neat little gadget. NOTE: If it goes to quickly, it can knock the egg out of the cup, so be careful.d

The Egg Cracker works well once you master the technique. Never knew these egg crackers existed...was looking for egg cups on amazon. Now this is an always used tool...love it! The egg cups are fine, but could be a little more substantial....metal is a little thin and they do not look high end, but they serve the purpose.

Excelente producto!
