HUGE! Healthy! Super fresh!
I ordered the fresh galangal, because I wanted to plant some. With the turmeric and ginger I had bought before, it took me several tries to get it to grow, and the first generation struggled. I had purchased them from the supermarket, or from reputable catalogs...still it was a struggle. These roots were enormous, as if fresh dug that day, and I no sooner put them in the ground than they popped up like daisies and have been growing great guns ever since! The juice from the root I did not plant was plentiful and pungent, perfect for cooking/baking. I'd definitely order from them again!

Lots of crisp, plump galangal
I was really happy with the amount of rhizomes that came in this order. They were crisp, fresh, very aromatic and flavorful. If you make a lot of Thai, Vietnamese or other southeast Asian food, galangal will help you achieve the complex flavors you want. If you have no access to an Asian market, this is the only way to get fresh rhizomes. And if you live someplace warm or have a greenhouse or sunspace, you can plant a few of them and let them multiply. Fresh galangal also freezes well. Just cut the rhizomes into two-inch long pieces and freeze them in a zipper bag. Use them within 6 months. Thaw, smash with a cleaver, slice into matchsticks and simmer with whatever you are making. It's also good in cocktails.

Very fresh and authentic. Order this and save yourself the trouble.
Excellent quality product. I’ve had so much trouble finding galangal in any of the Asian grocery stores around me (I’m talking multiple trips to several stores over the course of a week) that I just decided to order it online. The galangal arrived quickly and was very fresh! If you’re looking to grow your own you could likely propagate it from this. It added a lot of authenticity to my Thai cooking and I couldn’t be more pleased. I couldn’t use all of it so I cut some of it up into 1-inch pieces, and some into rounds (depending on what I would need it for) and froze it. If I ever run out I would definitely order it again.

Root was moldy and could not be used.
Disappointed with the product. The product was totally different from the picture. Product was in pieces with all fresh growing ends removed. There were some cavernous rotting areas inside. About half the material was usable for grinding. This was my first time in buying this root and wanted to use it in some ferments. Very disappointing. It is not allowed to return this product and I have contacted the seller for a replacement, but have not heard from them. I hope the seller will resend a fresh piece.

Arrived fresh as pictured
Never used galangal before or so I thought. Actually, it is an authentic traditional ingredient in Thai red and green curry pastes. I had been eating it for years! I decided I wanted to make my own Thai red/green curry pastes, East Asian soups, East Indian dishes, and herbal hot/iced teas. This is my second time ordering galangal. Each time I have been very satisfied with the freshness, quantity, & quality. But this second time there was a third (smaller brown) piece that was usable but definitely on the verge of having seen better days.

Fresh and plump. Got more than expected.
I've never used this before but I was looking at a few Indonesian recipes and it called for this root. I miss the Indonesian food I ate growing up and decided to get an authentic cookbook so I can recreate some of the dishes. I've been making most of the recipes from memory but my memory isn't good enough to get that flavor I miss. I don't know if my family ever used this root in Indonesia but I remember a lot of ginger root. Can't wait to try the recipes with this root instead. I'm impressed with how much I received and how fresh and clean it is. I received 2 large pieces and 1 smaller piece. I have enough to use fresh, freeze for later and maybe try to plant some.

Not as fresh as some have gotten
I guess it's a luck of the draw thing; unlike some of the reports here, my batch was not spectacular: tasted okay, but not super fresh; the cuts were decidedly dried out and one of the pieces had some mold on it. And I had zero luck getting anything to sprout, I was really hoping to be able to grow some since when Galangal does turn up around here, it's astronomically expensive. The rest is going in the freezer for future use.

There’s no true substitute for fresh!
What a treat, fresh Thai galangal! This was wonderful to have to be able to add to some of the soups that I make. There really is no substitute for fresh. It made such a huge and delightful difference that I took some to my sister’s for her to try. If you want that authentic fresh galangal taste, this product won’t disappoint. My sister loved it, too!
