A Crown of Snow and Ice: A Retelling of The Snow Queen (Beyond the Four Kingdoms)

A Crown of Snow and Ice is the third book in Melanie Cellier's Beyond the Four Kingdoms series. It tells the story of Princess Celine, a character who has been present in many of her previous books. Celine is the little sister of Celeste from The Princess Game, Clarisse from The Princess Fugitive, Cordelia from A Midwinter's Wedding, Frederick from The Princess Search, and the best friend of Sophie and Lily from The Princess Companion, A Dance of Silver and Shadow, and A Tale of Beauty and the Beast. After reading about her so much in the past, I already felt like I knew her pretty well, but this book still had some surprises to offer. Like Melanie's previous books, it takes many liberties with "The Snow Queen," the fairy tale it's based on, and places more focus on Celine's relationship with Prince Oliver than the on the chillingly dangerous Snow Queen herself. As such, it is a very different retelling of the story than Crown of Ice by Vicki Weavil or Disney's Frozen, both of which attempt to humanize the titular character of the fairy tale.The Beyond the Four Kingdoms series is a sequel to The Four Kingdoms. The biggest difference I've noticed in the three books released so far is that all of the princesses in the newer one have supernatural abilities as opposed to the empowering heroines from the Four Kingdoms books who use their intelligence and wits to get out of tight spots. Sophie and Lily, the twins from the first two Beyond the Four Kingdoms books, have the ability to communicate with each other telepathically. Likewise, A Crown of Snow and Ice begins with Celine receiving the ability to control fire from a fairy godmother. Since this ability is new to her, we join her on the journey of discovering this power and learning how to control it. Unlike Katy from The Autumn Fairy who is afraid of her destructive powers, Celine embraces her new abilities and uses them whenever she can. With the help of Prince Oliver and his little sister Giselle, Celine manages to keep everyone warm on their dangerous quest up a snowy mountain to break a curse on Oliver's kingdom that has frozen everyone's heart.It takes a while for the book to build momentum. The trek up the mountain feels as long and treacherous to read through as it does for the main characters, There are many stakes at risk for Oliver's kingdom if they do not achieve their goal. This novel did not include the colorful characters that Gerda met along her journey in the original "Snow Queen" but instead placed more focus on the effect of the shards in the magic mirror that froze people's hearts and their ability to perceive beauty. Only Celine's fire powers could melt the mirror shards and restore the cursed people to their former selves, but it was only a temporary solution that didn't work on everyone. To restore the entire kingdom, they would need to find an emblem that could block the Snow Queen's enchantment, which brought them on their dangerous trek up the mountain.Celine has matured a lot since the earlier books. She's several years older now than she was in The Princess Game, and it's clear from the narrative that she places more logic into her decisions and doesn't act as recklessly as she used to. She's still brave and daring, but it's toned way down, which was a little disappointing because I would have enjoyed reading a book from the perspective of someone as rambunctious and emotional as Celine was in The Princess Game. She reminded me of Isabel from Elena of Avalor, but now she's just like all of the other princess heroines from Melanie's books. Her biggest strength is her determination. Reading about her unlikely solutions to her problems was the most enjoyable part of A Crown of Snow and Ice. Celine also related a lot to Oliver's sister Giselle because she was also once a little sister who had trouble earning respect from her siblings. Their relationship was just as fun to read about as the romance between Celine and Oliver.A Crown of Snow and Ice is a fun book for fans of the Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series because it shows how much Celine has matured as a character from when she was younger. It doesn't offer much of a twist on the original "Snow Queen," but you can always read Crown of Ice if that's what you're looking for. I love how much effort Melanie puts into connecting the kingdoms and characters in her books, allowing them to feel like one big world of princesses and fairy godmothers. I definitely recommend at least reading The Princess Game and The Princess Search before this book to learn more about Celine and her family. I'm looking forward to learning what new superpowers the princesses in future books from the series will obtain.

Celine is the 7th child of the Lanover king and queen, sent as an envoy to Eldon to see if she can help the kingdom. Before she leaves, her godmother appears and bestows a crytpic gift. The party is abducted and then freed. But the king and queen are unfazed. As Celine learns to use hee gift she manages to free Oliver and Giselle and together the three try to save the kingdom.Loved this one. Celine is spunky and enthusiastic, my kind of girl. Such a fun story.

I have become obsessed with Melanie Cellier’s worlds and characters. Celine was a favorite from previous books so I was super excited to read her story and it did not disappoint at all.One thing I love about Melanie is the way she incorporates her previous stories, so I do recommend starting with the Princess Companion and moving forward, and it’s SO worth it.

Ever since A Crown of Snow and Ice was released hardly a week ago, I was anticipating the free time of the weekend to read it Celine's story at last. And the book was so worth the wait! I could never ask for a better rendition of "The Snow Queen"! Being equipped with fire matched Celine's already well-established character so much that I could have easily imagined her having such a gift in all the past books she's been in. And then there was the ice of Eldon. No princess in any kingdom could be a better match for Prince Oliver than Celine; that's for sure. And Princess Giselle was an amazingly lovable person; in fact, in her unfrozen state she was so different than before that it was easy to believe she really and truly was a whole new character. I hope that someday she might even get her own story, although of course the author hasn't planned that many books (even though out of pure selfishness as a reader, I would be ever so glad if she expanded her release plans for this series). Now on to the villain. I have to say that I was getting incessantly tired by all the efforts made by other writers to make the Snow Queen a good character instead of a bad one. Now this irks me a lot-- the reason why I've always hated retellings of "The Snow Queen"-- because then it leaves us no room to focus on what I'd truly consider the main, whole, and entire point of the fairytale: the ridiculously clear concept of true love!! Sure the Snow Queen wasn't portrayed to be good or bad, but what she had done was undoubtedly evil. The whole entire story focused on Gerda and her long, faithful journey to rescue her true love, and the Snow Queen was the one who hampered it. But I'm glad I laid my trust in the fact that Melanie Cellier wouldn't fail this fairytale-- this Snow Queen was the actual chilly, corrupted, coldhearted Snow Queen, not a person like Elsa from the movie Frozen. Celine is a character endeared to many of our hearts. And at long last, she comes back with full force, and true love for the prince of a kingdom that's gone all cold. It's up to her to save it. And how would any of us doubt that she could? Well done, Mrs. Cellier, as usual! A Crown of Snow and Ice is sure to stay another winning adventure for us all.

Melanie is a great author love the way she draws you in and makes you love the people and there story.

This book gave me goosebumps. Melanie Cellier has out done herself with this one, it is now in first place for my most loved books list. and Melanie has been a huge favorite with my sister to. when we first found out about Melanie Celliers books a year ago, my sister and i ordered two ebooks and her entire series. i still can not imagin anything i would trade that decision for. your books and writting style are stunning, i can't wait for Snows book to be released.Amelia Eckert.

I LOVE this series! It takes my favourite stories from my childhood and puts a brand new spin on them. I start reading them and just cannot put them down. It has led to way too many late nights in order to find out just a little bit more. Just one more chapter and of course it just keeps building lol. I can’t wait for more new stories in this amazing series!
