I learned far more than I expected
I bought this book as a stills photographer because I wanted to better learn how to tell stories visually. I was astounded with how well technical things were explained, far better than in the stills photography books I have read.It also delivered on the promise of understanding how to tell stories visually. Which I believe is also the goal of a stills photographer. As a stills photographer, I highly recommend you read this book because it will up your game even if you never film a movie.

VISUAL STORYTELLING
This (VISUAL STORYTELLING) is not just a book, trust me its an excellent presentation of how one can prepare oneself to take up film making and screenplay writing. Thank you so much Mr. SANDLER for bringing this to all those who are aspiring to make and write good films. The examples are so apt, so nicely explained with images to understand each narrative. This is simply amazing piece of work and research. I highly recommend this book for those who are wanting to make good films, write for films or in general wanting to know what actually goes into the process of making a film through highlighting the contents from a visual storytelling POV. SHOW DONT TELL! Clearly comes out so well! Best wishes to the author and all its readers. Thank you once again!

So much more than a cinematography book!
I picked up this book thinking that I would be reading an intro to cinematography book, and I was so pleasantly surprised to find that it was so much more. As a filmmaking instructor and filmmaker myself, I found myself exclaiming "Yes!!" out-loud several times while reading. The author thoughtfully articulates the concepts that I constantly challenge students and professionals to think about BEFORE beginning productions- and here they are all in one book! Sandler cuts right to the heart of the cringe worthy mistakes that most novice filmmakers make. He gives them the vocabulary to articulate why they are making visual choices and offers practical techniques for how they are going to accomplish them.A few of my favorite points that Sandler articulates are:1. Story structure. I say again- STORY STRUCTURE!! It is the job of everyone on the creative team to be making conscious choices to create tension, raise the stakes and create change visually that that support the story.2. The importance of working with a production designer, instead of thinking that you can rely on just a location to tell your story. Even on a low budget, the Production Designer is a key visual storyteller!3. Encouraging directors to be as knowledgeable about camera technique as cinematographers. This is what makes this book relevant and essential for directors. How can you effectively lead if you don't know what is possible from your team?Highly recommend for first time filmmakers, students, or anyone who has made films but doesn't feel that they have quite realized their full potential yet. This will give you tools to dive deeper into your craft and communicate effectively.
