The BEST Gate
ITEM: Regalo 2-in-1 Extra Wide Stairway and Hallway Walk ThroughBaby Safety Gate (Metal) COMMENTS: I am using this at the bottom of my stairs to prevent pets from going up - please keep this in mind that this is the only function I have in mind in this review. PROS: - This gate function is amazing, it’s a lift in/out style just like I remember when I was a kid and SO much better than all the over-engineered safety ones that are impossible to get open. There is still is a thumb latch, but it’s possible to install it without. - All of the contact points are adjustable, so if you’re like me and have uneven walls/baseboards/etc you can still mount it perfectly. - Absolutely no sound, resistance, or other function issues. - It’s metal and you can purchase installation kits! This is fantastic in the light of throwaway culture. - It’s one of the best gates and the lowest price. It’s honestly a win all around. NEUTRALS: - I purchased a used one examined by Amazon and it was missing a piece. I’m currently working with Regalo customer service and they’re being quite helpful. Will update if there’s any issue with it. As it stands, because the piece was one of the stops and not necessary for me, I installed and am still beyond pleased. CONS: - None! GIFTABILITY: (All of my packages are sent with Prime Delivery Day and manufacturer’s packaging preference selected. This may impact how things are shipped and cause my packaging experience to differ from yours.) It came shipped in the manufacturer’s packaging (a cardboard box); which was branded in black print. I would recommend not directly gifting it unless you’re not concerned about the surprise being disrupted. WOULD I PURCHASE? (This is a holdover from my Vine reviews, I actually purchased this directly, but figured I’d include it anyway - any prices noted are as of the time of writing): Yes, and absolutely will again if I need another! With a list price of $39.99 (currently marked down to $34.98), you can stop your search here. It’s hands down the best between price and function. My rating system is: 5 = no/minimal complaints, very pleased 4 = minor complaints, overall satisfied, but could be better 3 = notable complaints, overall average to ‘meh’ 2 = significant complaints, unhappy and will not keep/use 1 = entirely complaints, misleading descriptions, straight to the trash product.

Easy to install
I am impressed with the gate. It is by far the best gate I have used. I was specifically looking for a solution that would work for my stairs where there is only a railing on one side, and this product works perfectly for that setup. Additionally, the gate itself is very strong, providing great peace of mind.

Difficult one-handed. Sturdy gate.
Sturdy metal gate with smooth sliding extension and several mounting options. We mounted to a 2" square metal tubing that was the end of our metal hand railing, and it worked, but the velcro straps are a bit long (and sewn around a tensioner, so you can't just cut them off). It worked okay, but I thought that we were going to be able to screw the receiving bracket to the end of the wall across from the railing, at 90-degrees from the hinge; however, that mounting arrangement doesn't work with the latch--it has to be straight across from the hinge. The hinge is easily opened with one hand, but you can't always lift the gate up and out of the pin holes because it slides along two pins on the hinge side, and if you lift only from the latch side, it binds up and wont lift easily. So it takes 2 hands to unlatch smoothly, and with 1 hand you can eventually get it. Closing is the same since you have to line up the top and bottom pins to close, and the gate slides in/out, so it's not something you can just close with one hand without some fiddling. Not the best latch design, and the hinge side has a bit of play in it when attached to 2" metal square tubing (it's made for bigger diameter banisters). However, when closed, it's very solid, and it was nice that it came with brackets for many different mounting options (and will be removable without any marks on the banister side (the latch side we did have to put 3 screws in the wall). I wouldn't buy this one again, but it's not bad enough to exchange it. None of these baby gates seem to be ideal.

Great product!
This is a lengthy review but I've tried to cover all of the highlights and things you might have questions about as well as my experience with the gate in general. This gate is a great product! It[gate] is made of steel, not some cheap plastic and lightweight wood contraption which breaks easily under the tension required to hold it in a doorway. While the listing is for stairway and hallway applications, they can be used in doorways just as well. It is important to note that this gate must be hardware mounted, it can not be pressure mounted. While it can feasibly be done with just a screwdriver, a power drill will make the job easier. Two of these were installed in doorways in my home to grant our 2 cats reprieve from being chased by a very rambunctious Bassethound puppy at every turn. We originally had wooden & plastic combo gates but they were cheap and cracked after a very short period of time. I returned one gate once and the other gate twice; the wood & plastic gates were also pressure mounted and unlike the steel gates, weren't actually true gates. We had to remove then reinstall them every time we needed to pass through the doorway which was a real pain or step over them which caused one household member with severe knee problems a lot of true pain not to mention the danger of falling if a foot hadn't cleared the top of the gate as happened to another household member. These steel gates were the perfect option because they actually have a gate which pivots open and then latches back into place as needed. For those of you who are interested in info pertaining to keeping your little one safe, I highly recommend this gate. It is designed such that you choose which direction for the gate to swing open which makes installing at the top of steps/stairs, very safe because it can & should be installed so that the gate will not swing out over the steps/stairs, only over a floor. The gate can be easily opened one-handed by an adult or older child but your toddler won't be able to manage the task, even with both hands. When properly installed following easy to understand printed text and pictures for clarity, the gate is spaced such that a little one can not get his/her head stuck in the space between the bottom of the gate and the floor and the uprights/rails are also designed with that in mind. The design makes it easy for you and your little one to see one another so you can keep an eye on the little one and he/she can track your movements easier too so that separation anxiety doesn't kick in. When you've finished installing the gate you will have 2 pieces left over, it's supposed to work out that way. Save the two pieces along with the installation instructions and the marking templates in the event you wish to move the gate and need it to swing in the opposite direction. You would also need the installation instructions in the event you wish to purchase a completely new hardware kit for the gate. Be sure to circle the model number of your gate inside the instructions so that you'll remember which hardware kit to order as there are two different kits available. I highly recommend this gate whether for baby humans or baby pets. I believe it to be a very good quality gate. One last noteworthy point; a small level and something to use as a temporary shim may come in handy. If like me, you live in an older home built by hand and on blocks and therefore may not have level floors. You'll need to level the gate so that the latch works as intended. I speak from experience. One gate is fine but the other takes a bit of finessing to get the latch to catch as it should. It works fine but eventually I intend to move the hardware on the pivot side of the doorframe so that it functions smoothly.

3 years and still going as strong and when we purchased
Been using this gate since our daughter learned to crawl and it’s still going strong! Out daughter is 3 and a half now and she has climbed on slammed and stood on it and this thing hasn’t budged. Still as steady and safe as the day we installed it. East to install and is versatile. We had it in our previous home in front of our decently wide stairwell entrance. And in our new home it’s used to keep her out of a room. Easily adjustable to for your situation. Doesn’t look clunky like it’s plastic competition. Looks just as sturdy as it is. Very nice, especially for being as budget friendly as it is.

Looks good, questionable construction
UPDATE - Aug 7th, 2024 I reached out to Regalo to inquire about the warranty and I was told they would NOT warranty the gate because I had bought it as a returned product and to go through Amazon instead. Consider now, does Regalo not warranty their products if purchased as a returned item or open box from a brick and mortar store like Target? What's the difference? With the gate installed, box/packaging disposed of, uninstalling and sending the parts anywhere (ordering and installing a new gate) was not worth my time so I modified the gate to overcome it's shortfalls in my original review. ORIGINAL REVIEW The Regalo Heritage wooden extra wide baby looks nice from a material and color standpoint. Installation is straightforward as with any baby gate. Instructions are easy to follow and hardware is adequate. That said, looks do not make up for function, especially in a product that is supposed to prevent injury or death of kids and or pets. The stress point where you pull the gate up is not mechanically fastened together. It is held with only a small dab of glue (only at the tip of the wood) and slight ribbing. All other corners of the gate are of the same construction. Once the gate frame separates completely, the grey balusters fall out of their retention holes because there is nothing holding them in place. The middle of the gate, where the two frames come together has no way to lock the two pieces together. The frames are always moving during use, making closing the gate tedious to keep everything aligned. In the photo you see I used a zip tie to hold the frames from moving. One each at the top and bottom. This fixed this issue. Every time you close the gate the latch post screws in ever so slightly and eventually needs to be adjusted out again or the gate will not latch well. Adding some thread locker to keep the latch post from screwing in should stop this. These issues would have easily been discovered if this gate was tested before commercial production. I learned all of this in less than 30 days of ownership and use. While there is a warranty, it is not worth anything because the construction is in complete question along with the safety claims given the construction techniques used in the gates production.

Good gate, but Regalo has terrible customer service
This gate SEEMS very sturdy- see final comment for more explanation. It is mostly made of metal and has a bit of weight to it. This gate is nice in that it comes with several ways to attach to the wall or banisters. In our case we have two rounded wooden banisters and did not want to drill into them. We used the banister conversion kit that came with the gate and measured very carefully to make sure that all parts were lined up properly. This was difficult, but necessary because the gate will not latch properly if it is even slightly uneven. The gate is almost impossible to open with one hand because you need to squeeze the latch and lift the weight of the entire gate with that one hand on the top corner of the gate. This may be possible to do, but is definitely very very difficult. If my hands are full I usually use my foot under the gate to lift it while squeezing the latch with one hand. This is one of the only gates that is able to be used on an open staircase with no walls to attach to, so that is the reason that we bought it. We used the gate for a little less than a year with no issues, but a few days ago my 22 month old pushed the gate open quickly and broke the plastic hinge that the gate swings open and closed on. This integral part of the gate is PLASTIC and in my opinion broke very easily. I contacted customer service and was told that the warranty lasts 90 DAYS. I need to purchase a replacement part to fix this -which I did. I was then told that it will be 12 BUSINESS DAYS before I should expect to receive it in the mail. After hanging up I thought 12 days is a long time to be without a baby gate so I call back to see if I can get the shipping expedited. I am then told that Regalo never uses expedited shipping because it would cost them too much and if I need the part faster it is recommended that I buy a new baby gate! I was also told during this phone call that the part that I need is on back order and would not be available in the 12 days that I was told previously. I asked how long it would take? I was told that it would not be available for at least a month and a half. I am less than thrilled about the customer service. Does anybody have a baby gate in their house that they don't use for two weeks at a time or better yet a month and a half? I think most people who have baby gates use them daily. When I mentioned my frustration to the Regalo representative on the phone, she stated that there is nothing that she can do and suggested I buy a new baby gate. No thank you! I will not be buying Regalo products ever again!

Secure gate that’s easy to use daily
This gate feels solid and secure once installed. The swing-open feature makes daily use easy, and the extra height adds peace of mind for kids or pets. Pros: sturdy, tall, convenient swing gate Cons: installation takes some time to align correctly Bottom line: Great option for stairways and hallways where safety matters.
