I am new to arc welding (stick) and teaching myself. I have a cheap fixed shade helmet that is so dark I have trouble finding my arc/welding location-starting point. Wanted to see if one of these fancy "auto-darkening" shades would help with that issue. Received this helmet quickly. Made of plastic and lightweight, this inexpensive helmet seems great for learning about "auto-darkening" but, also seems flimsy and weak. Included instructions are worthless. Common sense can determine most of the settings/controls. Sat in the living room, put it on and started testing the controls settings. No way of determining if there is a battery installed or if it's rechargeable. I'll have to hang it in the sun to see if the "solar" charging panel actually does anything? Figured out if you turn the knob on the outside of the helmet the viewing lens flickered indicating there was a battery installed. It will probably require removing screws and the entire lens assembly when it needs to be replaced. External and internal lens both have a clear sticker that says "remove before using". You have to figure out that you have to remove the clear plexi shield that has a film on it and remove the film then snap back in the clear plexi shield (probably to protect the light sensitive lens?)back in. Stared at a dark room with the knob "on" and the room was partially shaded. turned my head and faced straight into a lamp and the lens darkened. So, I guess it works. Looked back into the dark room and the lens "un-darkened". I'll try to update after some welding practice but this seems to be an inexpensive auto-darkening helmet for experimenting. Knobs and adjusters are plastic-cheesy and not precise.

For the price, this product is very well constructed. It is extremely light and comfortable. The viewing area is larger than other mask in the same price range . The only thing I didn't like that much is when worn the mask sits too far off my face. The controls are easy to use and respond very well.
