Did not rise to its potential.
Alita: Battle Angel was a great sci-fi/action movie. When books and other supplements come out for a movie like this I always look for the ones that give you more detail about the world of the movie. Ido's Journal started out doing this in a most interesting way, but soon fell short of being not much more than a different sort of novelization.Alita: Battle Angel - Dr Ido's Journal is an "In World" book that is supposed to be written by Dr. Ido himself. It chronicles his life sometime before the movie starts (when his daughter was still alive) up through the end of the film itself. All of the prose before the film is very interesting, and gives a lot of background information on both Dr. Ito and his estranged wife, Chiren. You learn more about the motivations of these two characters, and how Dr. Ido thinks and rationalizes the choices he has made. This sort of prose continues up through him finding Alita and putting her together. All is well up until we get to the timeline where the movie starts its action scenes with Alita. From there on the book is mostly a play by play of what happens in the movie. Sure you still some commentary and insights into how Dr. Ido perceives it all and what he thinks about it, but that is seriously underplayed in comparison. Instead you get blow by blow descriptions of battles and exposition on the scenes that happened in between. It's rather disappointing. I was hoping to hear more of Dr. Ido's expertise in cybernetics. How he built Alita's first body, and what he has learned of her new one. You don't get much more on these details than what you get from watching the movie. What you get as far as world immersion is a fair amount of detail on the Motorball sport. Rules, specs on the ball and some background on the types of players. So for me the writing of Dr. Ido's Journal falls flat, but there is more to the book than that. You get lots of beautiful sketches and other artwork. Maybe half the book is filled with impressive illustrations. There are also inserts that include a couple of sketches of the workings of a cybernetic arm of some inconsequential character, a ticket to a Motorball and so on. None of it is really all that exciting, and some items are rather cheaply made. All in all if you are looking for a book to get you more into the world of Alita: Battle Angel you may have to look further. This one only gives you a taste of it. If you are looking for an art book.... well.... buy Alita: Battle Angel - The Art and Making of the Movie. Not that this book isn't any good. I just don't think it's worth the retail price.

It’s a nice collectible if you loved the Alita Battle Angel Movie
I paid $20 for this. It’s not hardcover, so for what it is, I’d say $16 is what it’s worth, no more. It has some neat little removable inserts to make Dr. Ido’s journal more interactive. It adds a little bit more insight into Ido’s thoughts and events. One pet peeve is that it abruptly ends at the point where he builds Hugo’s cyber body and Hugo takes off for Zalem. SPOILER ALERT! why wouldn’t he have thoughts that lead to the end of the film, discussing Alita’s feelings and his feelings with the loss of Hugo. Why is there no thoughts about Alita becoming thee Motorball champion in the end. It’s just weird, how it ends as if it’s an unfinished written book.

Excellent Book
The quality is great, love the content and since I am a real Alita fan I am loving the book very much. Just wish Disney would get of the rumps and make movies since they have the Fox company now. Alita is a very rich and enjoyable genre and I will look forward to more books I have coming.

Great addition to your Alita: Battle Angel collection
If you watched the film and like so many have become an instant fan, Dr. Ido's Journal gives you an extra bit of insight from Dyson Ido's perspective. The journal includes a pretty good amount of detail explaining how Motorball is played, various sketches and art designs likely used for the film. And the writings itself offers a surprisingly touching account of Dyson's real daughter 'Alita' and her backstory before we meet the heroine Alita in the movie. As a bonus you even get a Motorball Pitpass and the wanted flyer you see in the film. I highly recommend :)

If you want something extra
The journal covers some of the Iron City prequel novel and covers almost all of the Alita Battle Angel movie. For the story you are better off reading the prequel and then jumping into the movie. The journal is good to read if you want a little some extra from the experience. It was high quality photos from the movie as well as a lot of protype artwork in it that looks great. The journal also has movie props in it like a Motorball pass or the bounty wanted poster in the movie. They are not attached to the book so be careful when you unwrap the book that something doesn't accidentally fall out. I enjoyed the book but having read the Iron Sky prequel book (recommended) and the seeing the movie afterwards the book just feels like a little something extra to have if you enjoyed the movie.

A must for an Alita fan!
I’ve watched the movie several times now and I love it! Reading Ido’s journal gives you a different perspective in the film and I find it very immersive. The book has a beautiful metallic cover and is of great quality. Make sure to go out and support the film for us to get sequel!

If you liked/loved Alita and aren't put off by words and pictures on paper, this is for you
As others have noted, this is a visually stunning, excellent companion work to the film and enhances your immersion into this world.

Good, well illustrated and put together book.....for what I paid
This is a nice and well put together book. It has a nice tactile feel to the pages, as if it is an actual Journal, created by the author. The illustrations are nice and there is something interesting to discover at the turn of every page. I happened to buy this as soon as it came out, which secured it at a good lower price than currently shown, so I have given it 5 stars, but if I had to pay the £5 extra, like it is now, it may only have got 4 stars, because of the price, for what it is. For a fan, it's great, but if you are not so die hard of a fan, then I would recommend the hard back 'art of': Alita: Battle Angel - The Art and Making of the Movie (Alita Battle Angel Film Tie in), for a few pounds more. Buy this after you have bought the 'Art of', if you are looking for more movie hype.

Lovely format and artwork. Terrible writing...
Lovely format and artwork. Terrible writing - no effort at writing anything imaginative or creative and no insight into the character of Ido... Someone who watched the movie had a go at writing something...
