I Had No Idea I Was Getting Civet Poop Coffee
I had no idea I was getting civet poop coffee when I ordered this. I only figured it out using Google translate with the box. I thought it was expensive because it was going to include a Vietnamese coffee maker inside based on the pictures. Nope. Just coffee and a coffee leaf.SMELLBefore brewing, civet coffee has a very sweet smell. It smells like chocolate, coffee, and raspberries. I think it smells similar to Gloria Jean’s raspberry chocolate lava coffee. The smell as it brews is just of regular coffee, nothing special.LOOKAfter brewing, it has a slightly oily surface.TASTECivet coffee tastes like any number of indistinguishable, slightly bitter, black coffees. It left a slightly bitter taste on the roof of my mouth.To draw out the true flavor of civet coffee, you need cream and perhaps sugar. Then, you can taste the chocolate and berry notes that you smell before brewing. If someone told me I was drinking a raspberry mocha, I’d believe them.It’s a very smooth coffee (queue ex-lax jokes) that’s more on the weak side. The coffee taste is like a light to medium roast. The lingering aftertaste is that of cheap coffee. It wouldn't be a repeat purchase for taste alone.As a novelty gift for that hard-to-buy-for coffee lover, this is fine. It's one of those experiences that you want to share with others. Invite everyone over and dare everyone to try a cup of coffee pooped out by a civet.

The gift set is basically a foil pouch sealed 8 ounce bag of medium-fine Vietnamese coffee in a handsome and elegant, sturdy cardboard gift box. The coffee is rich and bold with a complex range of flavors that holds up on its own very well whether its mixed with condensed milk to make an excellent cafe sua da or drunk hot with a couple spoonfuls of sugar. For best results you'll want to prepare this with a Vietnamese style drip coffee filter. This set does not come with such a device but they can be easily obtained from this site.
