Connects developmental stages with somatics
This excellent book primarily focuses on the work of Lisbeth Marcher, who has developed a system called Bodynamics, in which she has tracked and identified the impact of developmental issues on the muscles of the body. For instance, one small muscle in the quadriceps is related to crawling, when the child learns to explore the world. If this child was not encouraged to crawl, and did not feel safe doing so, that muscle is likely to be underdeveloped. Later in life that becomes a diagnostic for that person's early life experiences. Bringing focus to and encouraging that muscle to develop can then help the person to feel safe and comfortable exploring and reaching out in their current life. I highly recommend this book to therapists who are interested in the connections between psychological issues, the body and the breath. This book also covers the topic of shock (the effects of overwhelming stress on the sympathetic and parasympatheic nervous systems). Working with shock has been a key element in helping my clients to move past stuck issues and find new resources. This book gives an excellent overview of working with shock.Susan L. Atchison

A very worthwhile resource
A very worthwhile resource, which covers a broad spectrum of theory and practice considerations in Mind-Body-Spirit, therapeutic explorations. It is presented in a manner that is useful to both therapists and patients alike. The material coveres integrates Family Systems, Character Development, treatment of Traumatic patterns and utilizes Breathing Interventions in the expansion of consciousness and well-being

A collection of articles
The book is a collection of articles - a lot of information is repeated through out the book. It’s an interesting theory and approach, but my sense is the book doesn’t do it justice

Body, Breath, and Consciousness: A somatics anthology
BB&C is one of the only titles in English that covers the emerging modality of Bodynamic developed by Lisbeth Marcher. For those interested in trauma, especially developmental trauma this is a good start to an important therapeutic approach. Other modalities are covered including articles by Peter A. Levine Ph.D. developer of Somatic Experiencing.
