I bought this book as I was on a management course and needed something to assist me with my assignments. This book covered nearly every module and was ideal as reference material. It tells you just what you need without going on and on. I would definately recommend this book.

This is a great book for anyone in their first line management position. The style is straightforward without the huge amounts of jargon or support for one particular management fad found in some texts, and the authors do not assume (as some others seem to) that an employee has suddenly been fast-tracked to the MD's desk.Another plus is the wide range of topics covered in the book, from finding the right employees and managing them while they work for you to parting company with them at the end of their employment. One criticism I do have (and the main reason this review gets four stars), is that there's no section on managing conflict between employees. It is partially covered in the sections on communication and discipline, but these focus more on the relationship between employee and manager than between two or more employees.Finally, a word of caution for anyone who isn't working in manufacturing: the book seems to assume that a first line mangement positon must involve a team of manufacturers or administrators with set tasks to do each day, and while the principles are transferable to other areas it is sometimes difficult to do. However this is a minor criticism of an otherwise excellent text on the practicalities of first line management.

This book is good for life-tips; you don't have to be a manager to benefit from it.

Good read although this book is a little dated I found it a good book with some basic sense tips.

Plain speaking and thought provoking , helps you relate to your work situation , was very useful when I was promoted to a mid management team leader role
