Difficult to align but works like a charm
I also bought a flashlight that works as a laser pointer. More about that later.I went to my local hardware store and bought 4 pieces of AWG 14 solid wire to make my own cable. I also got flexible conduit to connect the unit to my gate opener. Once all that was assembled and connected to the Omron, it was time to mount it. My sliding gate opener is mounted on a rectangle of 3" square tubular steel. I drilled through both sides and attached the mounting bracket with 4" long bolts. I have a PDF copy of the user manual for the gate opener and it has a wiring diagram for connecting the Omron. so that part was easy. I mounted the reflector to the fence at the side of our yard. Our garage is at the back of the house and access to the driveway is via an alley. It is a three car garage, so the distance from the Omron to the reflector is some 28-30'Now comes the hard part. I used the laser flashlight laid on top of the Omron to aim it at the reflector. This took some doing, adjusting the Omron both vertically and horizontally, but I finally got all three lights on the top of the Omron. I tightened all fasteners and it was time to test. I triggered the opener with the remote and then walked across the gate opening. The Omron stopped the gate immediately. The Omron is mounted so that its beam is about a foot above the pavement, so it should react to almost anything that crosses the path of its beam. Squirrels will probably not stop the gate, but dogs and cats and cars and our granddaughter should. I highly recommend this unit. Patience is required, but is worth it.It did come with the mounting bracket and fasteners to connect it to the unit. It also came with the reflector, but not with a fastener for it. That makes sense, as they have no way to know how you will mount it. The documentation that came with it does not address how to connect it to your opener. That also makes sense as they have no way to know what opener you are using. Just make sure you get wiring connection info from the manufacturer of your opener, specifically for this Omron model. We've now had a variety of weather, but no fog. We've had days with blindingly bright sunlight and last night it was pouring cats and dogs when I came home. The Omron unit has worked flawlessly through all these conditions. Here is an update. We have had some very light rain, just enough to cause water to bead on the Omron lens or the reflector and interrupt the beam. So I bought a 6" x 18" piece of sheet aluminum and fashioned hoods for both. I suspect that will resolve the issue.

Probably overkill for the application
I used this on a commercial, unmonitored, overhead garage door with an electric opener. The system was comprised of 5 major components: the overhead door, electric door operator, receiver, transmitters, and photo-eyes. The eyes were relatively easy to install and set up. Installation could have been faster if the instructions and diagrams had been better. This is a optical control device that can be used in many different applications and my the intent of my use of this Omron photo eye was probably one of the more simplistic of uses.

Very sturdy and well made
Very sturdy and well made. Works with Elite 3000 gates. Easy to set up since it has indicator lamps and a relay that clicks in and out as the beam is interrupted. Doesn't come with a compression gland for the cable, but you can get one at Home Depot (1" size).

Very impressive unit
I am very impressed with the construction of this unit. It's sturdy; It has the option of being light on or dark on, normally open or normally closed. It has a sturdy ten amp relay in it. It also looks like the relay is replaceable in this unit, so I don't have to replace the entire unit.I have two switches on the gate that are wired in series so I can't use solid state switches because of voltage drop. There is a high frequency of cars passing through the gate and it burns out the crappy Home Depot switches that I keep buying. I've gone through two Home Depot switches in one year. They were also more expensive than this switch.I will update later after the durability is tested on this unit.

excellent product.
photoeye works as it is suppose to . i see all these reviews on here and its not this sellers fault that they don't know what they are doing. yes they are a pain in the butt, but there are fixes for the problems you see on here . but of course I'm a installer and have to deal with all these thing and they are cheap fixes. excellent product..........
