Old is new again!
I've been using pods for years and years. However, I've been actively reducing plastic and waste. I switched from decades of liquid washing detergent to powder after learning they're made mostly of water and harmful to the environment and that has done wonders for my laundry experience. So, I started thinking about dishwasher pods and whether they were necessary and a good use of money, since you get only as many loads as pods, regardless of what you're cleaning. I decided to give the powder a try and I'm so glad I did. This stuff cleans even better than the pods, including the "premium" pods (which were the only ones that worked well for me consistently.) I was stunned at how everything sparkled when I pulled them out of the machine. And I thought it would be tedious, but I decanted the powder into my old pod plastic bin, put a throwaway plastic measuring cup in it and enjoyed a process almost as easy and quick as the pod, with zero mess. Full disclosure, I do use Jet Dry, as well, but I did with the pods, too. I recommend everyone try going "old school." Save the waste and save the money with great results!

Why use pods?
I've been using pods for years because that's what we've been trained to use. They claim it's not only more convenient but does a better job cleaning. I went to the supermarket a while back and realized that the whole section is pods now except for a couple of detergents. With all the news about plastics these days I did some research online and most of the articles and videos I read said it's basically all the same. I tried a box of Cascade and will never go back to pods again. It's cheaper, just as convenient, and cleans just as well. One tip is to add a little bit of detergent for the prewash. On some dishwashers there is a little bin for that. If not just sprinkle a little bit in the dishwasher before you close it.

Still the best option for your dishwasher after all considerations despite newer pods working well
Back to basics. The cascade pods do work better, but at what costs? There is always residue left from the pod casing in the bottom of my dishwasher. Takes multiple cycles for it to fully break down. Plus the chemicals are so caustic in it that anything that can be damaged by a dishwasher will be damaged by your dishwasher. Pretty much all plastic or silicone will be degraded to some extent or fully destroyed by the latest and greatest cascade pods whether or not they are dishwasher safe. This traditional powder on the other hand washes well but not perfectly while being nowhere near as damaging to sensitive materials. Also, no residue left in bottom on drain screen from the pod.I've learned to love to classic powder once more.

Tried and True - The Only Dishwasher Detergent I Use
I’ve been using this exact variety of Cascade Complete powder for over 20 years—ever since I received a free sample with a new dishwasher when I bought my first home. And after all this time, it’s still the best.If you’re looking for a reliable dishwasher detergent, look no further. This powder leaves everything sparkling clean and polished—silverware, glasses, plates, even my stainless steel All-Clad pots and pans come out spotless. I don’t even rinse them beforehand!I do occasionally add rinse aid, since my dishwasher recommends it and it helps with drying, but even without it, my dishes come out clean and streak-free.In my experience, this powder outperforms gels and tablets by far—and it’s much more economical. One box lasts me nearly four months and only costs about $6.

Good ol' cascade
I keep going back to granules the pods put horrible micro plastic into our waterways and ultimately in all our bodies. Most of the time pods break into granulated anyways when cramming the compartments to close. I have hard water I pre-rinse and fill up both compartments then add about a tablespoon more into the bottom of the machine. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones to order it prime next day and still have an intact box though a few granules leaked out the box came sealed in a bag so that works for me since the price is good and I always pour it into another container to protect it from coastal humidity. Cascade works amazing a little on a damp sponge for hand scrubbing really baked on stainless steel pans and baking dishes, they don't even need to go in the machine.

Very good by itself, excellent with an addition
This is very good dishwasher detergent, and at an excellent price. However it suffers from the absence of phosphates, which were removed years ago from all detergents. Up until recently, you could buy Cascade Boil Out which was, as near as I can tell, Cascade Complete plus tri-sodium phosphate but it's no longer available. You can restore the phosphate by adding a 1 lb package of Savogran TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate), sold here on Amazon, to the box of Cascade Complete. Pour both into a large container and mix thoroughly. I use a large Gladware resealable container to store the mix. 1 tablespoon in a dishwasher load does the trick. I also put about 1 teaspoon in the pre-wash cup. Sparkling clean dishes with no film. One warning. Don't buy the Savogran TSP-PF in the green box, since it does NOT contain phosphate.

The Gold Standard For Dishwasher Detergent
Keep in mind that when you buy liquid detergent is is nothing more than dishwasher soap with water added. So why not just buy the detergent and let it mix with the water in your dishwasher. I have tried pods and liquids and this works IMO better that any other dishwasher detergent that I have ever tried and it is by far the cheapest.
