Ok as a very basic resource but not well written or edited.
This book is perhaps suitable for readers with a passing interest who are looking for a very simple and extremely brief summary of some key points in Japanese history from the Jōmon to Heian periods. The simple style would maybe make it quite good as an intro for older children or teenagers to peak an interest in Japanese history & inspire further reading. However, the writing style is at times quite amateur (for example the phrase ‘the biggest […] in the whole wide world’ and the questionable & confusing sentence ‘the one decade replaces another decade’ without any context or explanation of which decade is being referred to). Certain key events (e.g the Isshi incident) are never clearly defined or explored although they are then referred to by name, whereas disproportionate space seems to be dedicated to some less relevant details (for example a summary of the life of Siddhartha Gautama which is perhaps not necessary in a short book focused on Japanese history). Certain claims also seem to be based solely on the author’s opinion (sources may have been drawn on in these cases but are not clearly cited).Overall, would not recommend for anyone looking for an in- depth/ well written look at Japanese history.
