Beautiful book with great instructions
A beautiful book that gives really good instructions, without overwhelming a beginner. Everything is doable, which gave me a confidence boost. Not that I completed everything but I gave it all a try! The projects are not contemporary, not exactly 21st century. However, their traditional, kind of throw-back, nature is very beautiful in its own way.

Very Good Primer for Crewel Embroidery
Very Good Primer for Crewel Embroidery with progressive projects introducing new stitches with each section. I have a number of years of experience with sewing and have dabbled with embroidery on a small scale - mostly just outline type stitches. Wanting to expand into crewel work, I was looking for a book that would allow me to progress with some insight and found just that in this book. Jane's turn of a phrase is a bit quirky for an American reader - I find her charming and understood her well. She has a nice writing and teaching style and is certainly very knowledgable and talented. I'm very satisfied with the purchase of this book and believe a new "stitcher" will be able to follow and learn.

Great book!
I haven’t done crewel work in years, so I had forgotten a lot of the stitches. This book shows All the stitches I will need, in addition to having patterns to use. Beautiful color pictures too!

this is a great book. It introduces 3-4 stitches
If you're looking for a getting-started guide for hand embroidery, this is a great book. It introduces 3-4 stitches, then gives a project to practice. There are also a couple projects at the end, if you like the floral style. Many of the stitches have great pictures of example work, to show how the stitches can be used to generate texture.

An excellent beginner's guide
This slim, modest book is packed with so much easy to understand, beautifully and clearly illustrated information for those starting out in crewel embroidery. The sample patterns included are charming and provide plenty of opportunities for learning the various stitches, while making lovely things. A really useful book that I am happy to recommend to anyone wanting to try this gentle and rather addictive embroidery style.

Color images and decent diagrams to teach new stitches..
Color images help to differentiate color changes. Stich diagrams could be clearer but it just takes a bit of time to figure them out. For avid stitchers, there are some new stitches to create unique works of art. A master of crewel, trained in Britain shows us how to do it, and do it well.
