Perfect for cleaning under a grate with 2 inch legs
This small Bayou Classic ash rake is the perfect tool to use with a Liberty Foundry cast iron fireplace grate. The grate is 22 inches wide, 12 inches deep and stands up on 2 inch legs. The spacing between the slots is three quarters of an inch wide and is the perfect size for burning small, medium or large coal in. Coal produces a very fine powdery ash that is hard to clean out from under the bottom of the grate. The Bayou classic rake is the perfect size to fit under the two inch clearance between the grate and the floor of the fireplace. Even though it has a fairly short handle being only 18 inches in length, I can get to the back of the space under the grate and in between the legs of on the sides of the grate and clean out all the built up ash that is there I find that a smaller tool is better for trying to clean under a grate that is so close to the floor and the Bayou Classic rake is perfect for the job if you have one like this. Yes, I would prefer a longer handle, but this rake still does the job and I'm very, very pleased with it. It makes it easy to pull the ash onto the fireplace shovel and empty the ash into a bucket to dispose of. It would be a vast improvement if the handle was parallel with the head of the rake instead of perpendicular to it. The other job that this rake handles extremely well is pulling or raking coal from the sides of the grate onto the top of the burning coal in the center of the grate. It's a wonderful little tool and I'm sorry to see that there are a number of reviews that don't like it because of it's size. For a coal grate this is a really good and hard to find rake to have, and I would recommend it to anyone that has a smaller and more difficult space to clean.

DEC 2017 UPDATE
DEC 2017 UPDATE: I did say I wasn't sure how long this product would last..well, three days ago the rake part came off - the rake came off the rod right at the weld. I would not buy this again - it is too flimsy and the weld is not strong. This is just about a perfect size for moving ash around inside my Osburn Matrix woodburning fireplace insert. The overall length from front to back is 17-5/8", but only 13" from the flat metal rake surface to the front end of the hand opening loop. The flat metal rake part is a bit thin - easily bent by hand, but that worked to my advantage because I could easily bend one half of it slightly to make it easier to get into the corners of my insert. Since there really isn't any pressure on it, the thickness is not truly a problem, but I'm not sure how long it will last. This item would be 5 star if 1) the handle was about 2" longer and 2) the flat rake piece was a slightly heavier gage.

Good ash rake at a great price
Not much you can really say about an Ash rake. I bought it to use with my Primo Oval because it is much cheaper than the one specifically made for it. It fits into the opening and pulls out the ash without any issue. For what it is meant to do it is plenty sturdy and should last a long time. The other reviewers saying it is too short or not sturdy enough to move around hot coals are correct but that is not what this is made for. It is only made to remove the cooled ash from a ceramic grill and for that purpose it works as well as any other ash rake I have used in the past.

cute lil thing
it's heavy. and cute. i have used it to rake the ashes from my pizza oven when it cools off. but it is now one rusted mess. i have it in a cabinet and it looks like it has been outdoors for ten years now.

It's small, but good enough for small wood stove.
This tool is much smaller than the picture depicts. It's about the length of an 18 inch log. And the head is less than 1/2 of the size of an iphone 6/7 screen. The rod is only about 1/4 inch width, about the width of a pencil. But it works and is at a very low price. I use it to distribute coals and push ashes through the grate on a small/medium wood stove. Would not recommend for a larger stove or fireplace-- A gloved hand does get too warm after 20 seconds, since the tool is short.

This rake is too small for practical use with a real pizza oven.
While this ash rake is sturdy it is too small for an actual pizza oven. With the length of only 17 inches you will need to have a very small oven or reach your entire arm into the oven. This rake can only be used on cold ovens. A longer handle would be more practical.

but he was hoping for a product that would do a better job of "sifting" and/or "separating" coals from ashes
Got this for my husband to use with our wood stove. It does help move coals around, but he was hoping for a product that would do a better job of "sifting" and/or "separating" coals from ashes. In all fairness, he says there is nothing really like that out there on the market now, and that you basically have to weld up or engineer something on your own. ie: a small long handled shovel, converted from a typical fireplace set, with solid bottom removed and replaced by a semi large metal screen/ grate welded into it. If someone would make this, we would buy it.

Great scraper.
The scraper works well, my only problem is that handle length, had expected it to be longer (24 to 36 inches would have been great). Otherwise, I am pleased with it.

Pensé que sería un poco más grande.
Es demasiado pequeño tanto el mango como el rectángulo para jalar las cenizas y acomodar el carbón; sirve para un asador pequeño porque realmente si parece como si fuera de juguete.

I can only use this product when the wood stove is cool, unless I put on the leather welding gloves ...
The product appears to be well made and works well. I would have given it 5 stars, but the handle/rod is much shorter than I expected. Therefore, I can only use this product when the wood stove is cool, unless I put on the leather welding gloves - but then the handle piece at the end is too small. I'm pleased.
