I like this Yost so much that I will be buying another one soon.
I went through decades of cheap made in China cast iron vices that are weak, sloppy, and prone to fracturing. I never actually had one crack on my but you know what, I wanted some quality. This one is made in Taiwan and is of solid forged steel. Yost is an old respected name. This is a real machinists vise. I overpaid for mine a bit have seen them as low as a hundred but still very happy. For a 4" vice the strength of this vice is incredible. I mounted mine over the lip of my workbench so I can clamp tall objects. So when the vice is closed it overhangs the edge of your bench. Don't quote me but I think the clamping strength of this Yost vice is about 8,000 pounds. It is easy, one finger operation. The first thing I did before ever using is was to remove the waxy, brown Cosmoline type shipping greast from all surfaces of the vice including the main screw underneath. Then I lubed the screw and all sliding surfaces with Magnalube G lube which in my opinion is the finest lubricant grease in existence. All moving or sliding parts were lubed and I also worked in a thin coat on the top anvil surface for corrosion resistance. I have had the vice for six months now and it is centerpiece of my workbench. I am seriously thinking about ordering a second one for the 41" Kobalt 8-drawer tool cart I just bought which in reality is a mobile workbench. I can't say enough about the quality of this vice I use it daily. For example I invert a portable belt sander and clamp it in the vice, turning it into a stationary belt sander. Lately I have been re-soling some favorite shoes I otherwise would through out it is great for clamping them after joining the sole to the shoe. Also the built in pipe clamp set of jaws underneath is great for cutting pipe. There is not play or slop in this mechanism whatsoever and that combined with the literally, one-finger operation makes this vice a joy to use. You would need a 5" vice at least of a lesser brand, and still not as useful as this Yost vice. This is really an industrial quality vice in a 4" size. Surprisingly compact for its power but make no mistake this is still a large vice. One last point maybe the quality of the paint is variable on these but mine looks just fine. I am not looking for a show car paint finish this is a vice. As long as the paint doesn't chip or have unpainted spots or big drippy gobs of paint on it, I am happy. The paint is on there smooth not perfect but more than good enough for the job. Nice looking BRIGHT red color much brighter than the Amazon photo. Highly recommended.

Superior Quality!
Exceptional quality...the clamping mechanism moves smoothly and easily. The magnetic plastic and aluminum jaw covers work and fit like a dream so order them separately for non-marring clamping. The pipe jaws are an added plus and are non-obstructive when using the flat jaws for clamping. Just as good as the more expensive options for the same features.

Excellent Quality Vise!
I read the reviews and bought the 4" Yost vise. It was well packaged, and I received it without any damage or issues. The red color matches my Milwaukee bench and tool cabinet perfectly. The machining looks great, and this looks like a quality, well-made vise. The jaws line up perfectly, and the vise moves smoothly when cranking or loosening the jaw. There are 2 levers that lock down the base of the jaw, and when loosened, the vise rotates 360 degrees without effort. I bought some magnetic vise jaw covers and they work perfectly with this vise to protect marring on more delicate projects. The base-plate has a 3-hole pattern, and if I were going to make a suggestion to Yost it would be to make it 4-bolt. Just be sure to mount your vice in such a way that 2 of the mounting holes are as close to the front edge (or corner) of your bench that allows you to place something in your vice, allowing it to hang down and not hit your bench. I would also recommend supporting the underside of the bench with a 12" x 12" x 3/4" plywood to bolt through. Having said that, I have not had any issues with movement or stability, even when I am cranking down and torquing bolts/nuts. Overall, I am extremely happy with this vise, and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone looking for a solid vise at a great price.

Beautifully manufactured, Intuitive & innovative!!!
I don't always take the time to write reviews but now and again theres a tool or product that makes me feel like I need to give it the due process it deserves. This Vise is certainly one of them (obviously). It arrived within a week of ordering it, got free shipping and the packaging was wonderfully done, double boxed and padded inside, arrived in perfect condition. Beautifully accented and painted a bright crisp red that draws your attention inside of the shop. I love that the attachments are oxidized for longevity, it certainly has done the trick inside of this climate which does get relatively humid now and again. The performance of the unit is nonetheless outstanding than it's appearance and well thought packaging. It has great clamping force, the swivel base has no movement once pinched down with a relatively light touch, really doesn't take much to get it rigid enough for fixed & sturdy workstation. The anvil is well machined and of a nice covenant size for the overall construction of the unit. I applaud the innovation put into the design for adjusting the tolerances of the unit to adapt for normal wear and tear overtime. That's very nice. It's got a full lifetime warranty on the unit and accents. If the jaws mess-up, the drawbar bends, the base breaks loose, they will replace the piece or vise free of charge to the customer. Yost really won me over with this guy. I couldn't be happier with the vise itself, and its overall performance. Plus it's US produced, manufactured, & distributed... (& it shows). Thank you Yost!

Received new ADI version (not forged)
I received the new ADI version instead of forged steel. That was disappointing for me since I can't be sure how it will hold up and all the existing reviews are for forged steel. There's no data on ADI vises since no one does it other than the new Yost. The packaging was okay, but not as nice as I've seen in earlier reviews. The paint wasn't terrific, but good enough. It was very greasy and needed to be cleaned up quite a bit. It looks kind of like cast iron, which makes me a little uncomfortable. You can see in my photo there's no welds and it looks different from the forged picture. I got it for a low price so I'm hoping it works out. Time will tell if ADI is a good material/process for building vises. Here's some updated wording from the manufacturer's website: "The Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) series of professional grade bench vises is constructed out of 130,000 PSI Tensile Strength Austempered Ductile Iron and is at least 45% stronger than the Yost FSV (forged steel) vise series. ADI castings are (1) continuous cast, precision machined, whereas the FSV series was forged then welded together. The ADI line of vises is equipped with replaceable machinist and pipe jaws. Adjustable hardened guide rails provide smooth, precise operation. The durable powder coat finish provides a professional finish that helps prevent damage from weather. The ADI base features two lockdowns for a tight grip."

A Nice, Seemingly Well Built and Highly Usable Vice
This came well packaged and was in excellent condition at arrival. There were no chips, scratches, peeling paint or other problems a few mentioned. This vice is as nice looking live as it looks in the photos and makes a nice addition to my work bench. The vice opens and closes with ease, the jaws line up well, with no air gaps, and the little beast swivels with relative ease. I don't make my living using a vice, but I do have, including this one, four. I'll be donating two that are smaller than this one, and may sell the eighty some pound one I have too, since it's overkill. The two smaller vices I have are what many of us hobbyist end up with, because they are inexpensive and get most jobs done. They, probably, weigh a little less than 1/3 what this one does, but were adequate for most projects, like, holding a pieces of metal or pipe for cutting (e.g., sharpening a lawn mower blade). This one should make such projects even more comfortable to tackle, and should hold up to those projects far better, and with less risk of damaging the vice.

This is one tough vise!
Phenomenal vise for an affordable price especially if you catch it on sale. I bought the Yost FSV-5 for my step-son for Christmas and I might have to pick another one up for my garage. Everything you read about the vise in the product description is accurate as far as I can tell. The replaceable jaws appear to be machined and mate up perfectly flush. The action is nice and smooth. The turret permits rotating the vise freely. Aside from all the wonderful features, I primarily chose this model because it's made with 90,000 PSI forged steel. For the price I paid I feel like I stole this beautiful chunk of steel. There's a great video review on YouTube for the 6" version if you want to see how tough these vises are and what they can handle. The 5" is smaller of course but I have no doubt it will hold up for years to come. Also, I prefer forged steel over the cast iron used on the lower priced vises. However, Yost does make ductile iron vises right here in the USA but they cost significantly more. The FSV-5 line are all made in Taiwan from what I understand. The other thing that makes this vise a real bargain is the lifetime warranty. One last thing, the red paint is a nice change from the typical blue and black vises. It looks cool and stands out in his garage. Obviously I recommend the Yost FSV-5 vise to anyone looking for quality at a reasonable price.

Stout, Quality Vise
I needed a vise for my work bench, and because I have previously broken cheap cast vises in half from "over tightening", I wanted something strong. After a pile of researching this turned up as the best option for a stout vise without spending hundreds on a large US made ductile iron vise. Forged steel and a design meant to last, this fit the bill. It said on the box it was made in Taiwan (generally a higher level of craftsmanship there). I measured a 6" opening before the lead screw end enters the lead nut, so it should reliably open a bit wider than advertised. I tested it after bolting it down & greasing the lead screw by using it to crush some 7/8" OD 4130 chromoly (0.049" wall) scrap tubing. I figured that would be a good crash course for it to see if it had any defects, and it did it easily. It held the material very well. Fit & finish is great. The jaws line up very well, the slide is snug, and the screw turns smoothly with one finger. The double rotation locks work well. Jaws are sharp & hardened (and replaceable). I went to Yost's website for warranty registration and was pleasantly surprised to find it has a lifetime warranty. If it snaps in half I'll update but I think this should work well for my uses.

Very good vise for the price
I received the ADI version, which is a direct replacement to their FSV line (which is now discontinued). I contacted the company and they were quick to respond to my question regarding the warranty, which the same as for the FSV series - lifetime warranty on the casting. Everything about this vise is solid. I disassembled it as soon as I got it to grease everything up again nicely. The only negative thing I noticed is that the paint chips off very easily in places and you'll see a lot of paint flakes when you disassemble it. Not a big deal, just coat it with some grease. Others have commented that the jaws did not line up on their units, but I had no issues with mine. Note that there are two black screws on the side which push against a small metal bar inside to adjust the play in the sliding section. Make sure to grease up the rails well and you can turn the screws almost all the way in to reduce the slop to close to zero.

So far, so good
I've been using this vice in my work room for about a year now, after shattering my old cheap cast one. So far, it has taken all the abuse I have thrown at it, and been worth every penny. I was extremely impressed with the packaging, mounting instructions, and overall feel of the vice, right away. No broken English instructions, or cheap pot metal parts. It is well finished, no crude casting, or poor craftsmanship noticeable. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that the pipe jaws aren't very spread out, so it allows round stock to move a bit when you push on it. That said, I barely use them, and the rest of the vice can't be beat for anywhere close to the price. I would definitely recommend a Yost vice to anyone who wants quality, but can't afford to spend $1000+ on a vice

Sure is a nice vise
Haven't tried many brands of vise but, it is a very smooth vise. The set screws are quite loose tho, might have to loctite-blue them for the setting not to change over time. Jaws were slightly offset when I received the vise but, easily adjusted with the play there was in the two screws that holds the jaws. Now its aligned perfectly. Very happy to be upgrading my previous 4 inch, mastercraft vise, which someone else at work bought, and it was garbage. I think this will make my work much, much easier from now on. Entirely satisfied with the purchase, this seems like a high quality vise to me.
