The only print/scan brand I buy now
I've switched from HP to Brother a few years ago and have never looked back. We have had several HP inkjet color printers and I spent about $30-$50/month in cartridges. I've purchased my first Brother laser (HL-5370DW) and everyone whined about not having color...for about 3 months. Then they caught on. Laser is faster, better quality, doesn't smudge, perfect for 95% of everything we need. Color was a useless luxury.I encouraged my daughter in college to purchase the HL-2270DW and she loved it. Later, I bought an ADS2000 high speed double-sided document scanner, and recently I just bought this DCP-8150DN to replace an HP multifunction that kept crashing...blinking lights, freaky noises and all.The Brother equipment is solid and does the job. The high capacity toner cartridges last for a very, very long time. I only buy the Brother brand toner because I'm sold on their quality and they don't try to scam you on consumables like HP does. They have a lot of printer feature options so you can find the mix that fits the need. No gimmicks and hype.I'm a Brother Bro.

Design flaw causes failure shortly after warranty expires. Most Brother printers are good. Avoid this model.
We have about 40 Brother printers set up in our offices. This particular model is bad. There is a design defect that causes the "fuser" to go bad. It usually happens after the warranty expires, so Brother won't fix it, even though it is a known issue. We bought 6 of these a few years ago, and 5 of them have already gone bad.

Good Machine, Prints quickly, scans in good quality quite fast, Does not fax
The machine is less weight and therefore feels a little tinnier than my Brother MFC8440. It prints about twice as fast as my old machine and scans about twice as fast too, much quicker scanning in color. The quality is quite good on the scanning, especially photos. I bought two of these to replace two 10-yr old Brothers and I like the scanning software that come with the unit. I was disappointed to find that the machine doesn't fax, but that is a small part of what I do so I just use another machine to fax. I'm an accountant and scan in thousands of documents a month - especially during tax season and I print a lot. This does the job very well.Pros:Scans and prints quicklyDoesn't jam as easily as the 8440 when scanning a stack of papersScanning software is goodHolds about 1/2 ream of paperEasy to set up and useCons:This machine does not copy (I'm talking about copying not scanning) as close to the edge of the paper (leaves about 1/4" border area which isn't large) as my older machines did so if I have paper with info close to the borders it cuts it off on the copy which annoys my wife as she uses one of the units at the house for her home projects and she copies a lot. Scanning doesn't seem to have that problem. No fax functionOne of the two machines prints a black stripe of about 1/16" down the left side of the paper on all printing. This is obviously a problem with the toner cartridge or the drum (drum most likely). Certainly can be fixed but the it takes time and money.

Avoid
The toner low sensor malfunctioned after about two months of use. Replaced cartridge several times with new and the sensor still malfunctions. Tried covering the light sensor with black tape and the sensor still malfunctions. Printer works great but this special feature makes the unit worthless. Avoid.

PROBLEM WITH DUPLEX PRINTING
We replaced another similar Brother copier for office use when the other unit was too expensive to repair. This unit was similar and on sale so we bought it. It works fine, but there is a problem: DUPLEX printing is LIMITED and misleading. If you need TRUE duplex printing, this machine is not for you. While it can PRINT the SAME copy on both sides of one sheet (when would you ever need that?), it CANNOT print from a copy which has printing on BOTH sides. With our previous Brother copier, we could copy a document which had different printing on both sides of the document by selecting "print two sides to two sides" in the duplex menu. This unit does not have that option in the duplex menu. In other words, be careful about what you expect or need from what is called DUPLEX printing!

Brother DCP-8150DN with Macs
So far so good. I have this printer plugged into my wireless router thus sharing it with both my wired and wireless computers. Its being used exclusively with OS X and installation was a snap. It consisted of opening the system preferences, going to the printer pane, and clicking add. From there the printer was automatically found and the appropriate drivers were downloaded from apple. Network scanning is simple and uses OS X's built in Image Capture app.The duplexing feature is fun, the document feature feeder is nice, and it really does print fast! I also greatly appreciate that the scanner door/cover holds it self open! It isn't a quiet printer but it does have a "quiet mode" that dials the noise down at the cost of about half the print speed. Personally, I would rather have the speed than the quiet. All in all I am very happy with it.What motivated me to try out Brother was my father's less than satisfactory results with his new HP laser all-in-one. So far, my father is wishing be bought a Brother instead :-)

manufacturer misrepresents duplex functionality
will not scan two sides to two sides; does not truly duplex; manufacturer provided misleading function description when purchasing and proposed "fixes" are less than satisfactory

So far, so good.
I read reviews and researched this one as best I could. Thought about going color, but decided on this B&W all-in-one based on reviews, initial cost, and cost of toner. I have Windows 8.1 and found drivers on the Brother website. The download and installation were extremely easy and straightforward. Quiet, fast and has worked like a charm thus far. The scan to PDF function has worked well too. The only reason I'm not adding another star at this time is that I have had it for less than a week.
