Starrett Combination Set, 12" Blade Length, 4R Graduation Type

It was tough for me to break down and spend the money on this Starrett combination square, but I am so glad that I did. I have used a few different combination squares in my 22 years of woodworking; Starrett has always proven to be the most accurate and last the longest. I bought a $40 square several years ago and noticed it was just a little off from being square. When I put the Starrett square against my $40 square, you can really notice the difference of how far off my cheaper square is. I compared the Starrett square with my machinist protractor and they matched up. So I checked all the squares in my shop with the Starrette and all but one were off by around .75 degrees. I know they were not perfectly square before checking them, but it is now very nice to have something that is perfectly square so that I can properly set my machines. This item arrived without an oil protective coating. I like that since I don't like to have to do a lot of cleaning before using a tool. Before I used it, I applied a good coat of Renaissance wax to help the parts slide well and protect it from rusting. This method of protecting my metal tools has proven very good in my high humidity environment. The ruler has a satin finish and the lines/numbers are engraved. It is very easy to read and the lines are very thin so you can get precise measurements (unlike stamped or CNC'd rulers). The adjustment knobs are also very easy to handle compared to my other squares. The square arrived in a quality plastic case with cut foam inserts for each of the pieces.

It's a Starrett - if you are looking for the best, this is it. I have Starrett tools I inherited from my grandfather that are still as good today as the day he opened the box 50 years ago. They just have that killer "old tool" look. The new ones have the same quality, look and feel. 07/31/2016 Three years on - You can buy a lot of tools like this for less money. But, these are extremely high quality, very accurate and after three years of heavy use show no wear. They come in a great protective case, and with minimal care will last me a lifetime. As I stated above I have Starrett tools my grandfather bought in the 1960's that are still fully serviceable today. If you are looking to buy this kind of tool once - save the extra dollars up and buy the Starrett.

fine craftsmen ship accurate easy to read. it might cost a little more than other square sets ,but worth every cent you won't be disappointed

The best it's accurate it hasn't failed like the cheaper ones. Usually they fail at the nut where you tighten the ruler into place. If this happens it means you have a cheap tool. It's a little pricey but worth it. I received it as a birthday gift or I probably couldn't afford it either.

There are sets that are just as accurate for less money but I’ve used Starret products for my entire career. I have confidence in a work piece when it has been laid out with a Starret product.

I use this every day, all day long. It's typical Sterrett quality. Mostly I use the protractor (I run a press brake) and I've bought a second blade to use with the combination square. The corner square never comes out of its box. After 18 months or so of daily use though, I'd have to point out that the protractor is becoming loose. Every time I move the angle it loosens up quickly and needs to be retightened. There are small springs under the cups of the tightening screws that may not be up to their original specs. Parts for this are basically impossible to find, so if you break or lose any of the bits you're out of luck. Next time I think I'll just buy the protractor head. But it does the job and does it well.

purchased for my machine shop class [conventional and CNC]. some things you just cannot do without, you may not use it daily but when you need it, it's hard to improvise.

It is a work of art. Very high quality. Ditch the old stuff and buy this product. "You get what you pay for" applies here.
