InSinkErator Badger 5 Garbage Disposal, Badger Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Food Waste Disposer

I really like the Badger series garbage disposals. My previous one, 1/3 hp, lasted for 15yrs before going out. I find they're easy to remove and install. They are durable and powerful. The noise level is nominal. Ours never clogged nor jammed, and even if it did jam it has a simple access port under the unit to release the jam with an Allen wrench, which Badger provides with the new unit. The unit is compact and remains out of the way to leave plenty of room under our kitchen sink. I installed a 1/2 hp garbage disposal this time to get even more grinding power out of it. The price point is reasonable, in my opinion, as compared to other disposals of this type.

Good product, but it doesn't come with a cord. And, it won't accept one of those snap in cords. It has two wires that twist onto a standard cord with two wires and a ground wire. I connected mine to an existing cable that was heavy duty. It was a bitch fitting it into the wire cavity, but eventually it fit. I used the existing drain rather than the one it came with. Installation took two hours because of that heavy duty cable. I had to clip off a too-long ground wire, then struggle to fit it around the screw. Otherwise, the installation went as described in the instructions. Working under the sink was a bear, but my headlamp made a big difference in placing the screwdriver and seeing what I was doing. The disposal works and isn't that loud. The original disposal, also an Insinkerater, lasted 35 years, so I got my money's worth there. And, I should mention, I was able to use it's housing for the new one. I wonder if I can recycle the old unit.

Replaced the 1984 version perfectly. Just a little more tools and effort than changing a battery. So easy that I probably missed the part to remove the drain plug. If you don’t have a dishwasher you don’t need to worry about it. It’s where the dishwasher drain tube attaches. For what now is an obvious reason, there is a plug in there. Before you do anything just take the handle end of a small ish screwdriver and give it a few whacks with a hammer; you’ll feel, possibly hear it pop out. Remove it from the top and it’s good to go. If you don’t do this you will have standing water in your dishwasher ask me how I know. Great product I hope it last as long as the last one that just got too rusted after….44 years???

I've owned InSinkErators before and the Badger 5 1/2 is similar to the one I owned before. I've had two basically. So this is same as the Badger 500 from Home Depot but costs about $30 less. Needless to say I'm happy with purchase. However, more importantly this was pretty easy to install. It took me a total of 2 hours to install. Actual work was more like 20 minutes. The rest of the time I kept reading and rereading the instructions or I was constantly washing my hands because well it's plumbing work and it's dirty. After installation this works great. It's powerful - my other disposal is 1/3 HP. It's pretty quiet or at least quieter than my old GE disposal. My first disposal lasted at least 10 years. I sold my house with this unit installed so I'm not sure what its status is now. This second one I've only had for about 1 month and it's working great. If I remember to do so, I'll update a few years later. A really cool feature I like about InSinkErators is that if you get things lodged in the grinder and it won't spin, you can use a screwdriver and turn the motor grinder from the bottom of the unit manually to dislodge whatever is stuck to it. With the GE model I had replaced, the troubleshooting guide suggests using the end of a broomstick to try to turn the grinder. I think this is stupid compared to the feature in the InSinkErator. Maybe this is a preference thing but I like being able to use a Philips screwdriver in lieu of a large broom handle, which makes it hard for me to know if the grinder is turning or not. I only have experiences with InSinkErator and GE. I like InSinkErator better because of this feature. To be fair the GE is probably a bit easier to install but given I'll only install this once in a very long while and things sticking to the grinder happens at least a few times a year. This feature is worth way more to me than the easy install, which is only a few minutes difference anyway. My suggestion before installing is to review a few YouTube posts on installing this device. If you do there are just a couple of major takeaways. 1) Knock out the little piece in the Dishwasher connector if you have a dishwasher - VERY IMPORTANT.. 2) It may be best to put the drain connection thing before you put the disposal under the sink - this consists of the gasket, a stainless steel ring to tighten the gasket and the extension to the connector, and the connector piece, which comes with the unit. Another suggestion is to get the InSinkErator CRD-00 Power Cord Kit. You can probably use your old one but if you're going to go through the trouble of installing a new disposal it's probably better to spend an extra 8-10 bucks to make sure all the pieces are new and most importantly are available when you start the project. Other than that, if your dishwasher and sink drain set up is pretty standard, this should be real easy to do. First time I ever installed one the drain set up was pretty messed up so it took me a long time about 6-7 hours mostly having to drive back and forth to Home Depot or Lowes. Second time my drain set up was pretty standard it only took me 2 hours but only about 20 minutes of actual work. Good luck.

(Relatively) easy installation. Getting snap ring on was difficult for this 73 year old. First time didn’t get on tight, causing leak. Redid everything, got it right 2nd time. Very quiet!!!

My house was built by the first owner and his brother. I suspect that neither one possessed a framing square nor a level. The disposer was connected under the sink with a straight fitting rather than a P trap. Both sinks then fed to a "T" where the P trap was downstream. This made the alignment of the straight fitting critical and it turned out to be too short and too low to match the new disposer. The instructions talk briefly about orienting the disposer to face the plumbing but do not make it clear that in order to rotate the disposer to mate with the plumbing the disposer has to be fully installed and then the hanging weight of the disposer allows it to be rotated to the right before you cinch the clamp to lock it in place. Make sure that all three mounting lugs are engaged with the ramps on the sink adaptor. If you miss one, the disposer slams into the bottom of the undersink cabinet. You can imagine how I know this. After three days and two trips to different hardware stores, I was able to mate all of the plumbing up. Final leak test showed no leaks and per instructions with the sink partially filled with water I pulled the stopper and turned on the new disposer. It emptied the sink so rapidly that water briefly backed up in the other sink. It is also a lot quieter than the disposer replaced. Both were the same Insinkerator brand but many years apart in age. The new disposer is great but the instructions could be a little bit clearer about how to orient the disposer to the plumbing. I decided that it would be unfair to reduce a star because of the vague instructions.

Desde hace años buscaba poner un triturador en casa, y finalmente lo pude hacer. Me había tardado dado que los que había visto estaban demasiado caros. Éste no costó demasiado y funciona a la perfección. Definitivamente yo no diría que es fácil de instalar, porque no tengo idea, pero alguien que sabe seguro lo hace con rapidez.

Exchanged my old one with this new one (same brand and size). Installed it myself. Works nicely. Delivery was fast and cost was less than the stores.
