The New American Commentary: 1, 2 Peter, Jude (New American Commentary, 37) (Volume 37)

One of my favorite commentaries
Schreiner's is thorough and deliberate in his explanations of the text. His research is obvious and helpful, as he presents many views of various texts, but presents his conservative, Calvinistic leanings consistently. The only "con" I might have is his handling of 2 Peter 3:9, seemed to cut short the discussion and refer readers to John Piper's explanation of God's "seeming" permissive vs. decreed will. To explain what some consider God's "desired" will vs. His "ordained" will, Schreiner used many quotes from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament); however, he failed to recall that God's call to repentance and desire that none perish were directed at His chosen people of Israel.Additionally, as a parallel to 2 Peter 3:9, Schreiner appropriately references Romans 2:4, "Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?" But he applies this passage to "all" people in the world, when the apostle Paul limited his explanation of God's purpose in being patient to "all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints" (Romans 1:7).I do not mean to fault Schreiner for this view, since many scholars whom I respect have said as much. It just seems we often water down the text to make God's sovereignty more palatable. We exalt humanity under the guise of the mystery and unfathomable depths of God's will. It's not a mystery if God has repeatedly explained His sovereignty in His Word.

1 Peter - Thorough and Accessible
I used this commentary as a reference recently as I preached through 1 Peter. I spent seventeen weeks preaching from Peter's letter and after the second one this commentary became my most favored resource. Schreiner does excellent exegesis and continually brings out real-life understanding that a pastor can use in the pulpit. While a scholar, he does not show any hesitance in pointing out the weaknesses, and even errors, in the work of other commentaries. He does not do this out a sense of arrogance over his own work, but from a deep desire for all scholarly and pastoral use of his commentary to be biblically informed above all else. Schreiner aims to have the text be clearly understood, and clearly applied, for Peter's letter speaks as strongly to our times as it did to the times in which it was written. I only read the 1 Peter section of the book but I presume the sections on 2 Peter and Jude are of similar quality. I highly commend this commentary.

A Trusted Scholar
I just got my copy and already using it for a class that I am teaching on Jude--Dr. Schreiner does a great job in this series--one of the better ones.Dr. Schreiner interacts quite well with the scholarly literature out there. He is up on the Jewish traditions and other elements needed to understand Jude.He leaves no stone unturned--offering several views on a verse and then giving the reasons for the one he favors--very scholarly indeed.Besides, he is not afraid to offer a more literal translation when it best fits the context--I put this volume right up there with Bauckham celebrated work on 2 Peter and Jude. Get this one!

Hoping to get the full set. Outkast in new and verse by format is incredibly helpful in the Bible study I am leading. Quick to find the answers I need and appreciate the insights!

My GO-TO commentary on 1 Peter
This is my GO-TO commentary on 1 Peter. After having Dr. Schreiner for a professor at Southern Seminary, I gained quite a bit of respect for him as a pastor, theologian, and man. Dr. Schreiner is one scholar whom I am pretty much trust anything that he says. As I've been preaching through 1 Peter for 3 months now, this has definitely become my go-to volume.

Schreiner is among the best commentators on 2 Peter ( only read the two Peter section of the book). His introduction to the book of 2 Peter is very capable, exploring all theories raised against authorship and responding that the book was written by the Biblical author. His comments on the text of Scripture, while not exhaustive are even handed.

Good but ...
Very detailed in the differing views of interpretation. Personally, I got lost in all in the wordiness. Also, he quotes often from sources outside of the canon of scripture as evidence to support a view. I was not comfortable with that. However there is also much to be gained from the book as long as you are aware of the things I mentioned.

Exzellenter Kommentar
Schreiner ist wie immer hervorragend. Selbstverständlich verteidigt er zu 2. Petr eine petrinische Verfasserschaft, für die er auch recht gute Argumente ins Feld führt. Exegetisch exzellent!

I will recommend it to my colleagues and friends
I rank this as #1 as a preaching commentary for 1 & 2 Peter and Jude. It has been extremely helpful to me in preparing a sermon series from 1 Peter. It is well-researched, the footnotes are thorough and it is clearly understandable. I will recommend it to my colleagues and friends.
