The Uzi Submachine Gun (Weapon, 12)
M**6
OK overview
The Uzi sub machine gun is almost as iconic as the M-16 or AK-47. Short, reliable, compact, it is perfect for use in close quarters, ambushes, security forces (the US Secret Service uses them). This book traces the development of the Uzi, the variants made over the years, use by different countries and replacement by other weapons.I've purchased several other of the Osprey Weapon series, this one is the most disappointing. I did not expect a technical manual of the Uzi. This book is at its best when it stick to the technical aspects, showing the original design, Mini, Micro, Uzi Pro and Uzi pistol versions, shows the exploded view of an Uzi and how to field strip them.Author McNab then spends 16 pages out of 80 reviewing use by criminals, long quotes from newspaper articles, US attempts to legislate gun control, even quoting the entire definition of an automatic weapon as found in the Anti Weapon Ban of 1994. I believe the author when he states that Uzi's contribute but a small percentage to gang warfare or crime, so why spend such a large portion of the book on this topic - I'd far rather see more info on the 4 versions of the Uzi, more information on the Uzi vs. AK-47, MP-5 and the replacement of the Uzi Galil, which are covered all too briefly. The book does have some nice color photos, provides a decent overview of the Uzi and its use, but I would prefer technical analysis and less social commentary.

Completely disappointing
It's common that the Osprey books just give a cursory look at a weapon, but this is worse than usual. The content seems to be little more than what you can scrape together from news reports and photos from the Internet. There's no real analysis of the gun itself and very little history specific to the Uzi. It's more a collection of historical events that the Uzi participated in. At least one-third of the contents of the book isn't even about the Uzi.The author seems to spend an inordinate amount of time talking about criminal use of the Uzi. While that is an unfortunate part of the gun's history, it's a minor part and not particularly interesting to most readers of firearms reference books. The book also has a number of annoying errors in it: photo of an Uzi reversed, making it look like left-hand ejection; incorrectly claiming that the Uzi was manufactured in Rhodesia; incorrectly referring to to the Ingram M10 as a "MAC-10"; and incorrectly reporting on the shooting death of Christopher Bizilj. It's not even clear why the shooting accident is in the book. McNabb includes it in the book's conclusion as a way to illustrate that the Uzi is a military-grade weapon. I think there are much better ways to prove that point! If you are looking for a quality reference book to add to your library of gun books, this is not the one.

It was a gift.
I gave it to a friend who liked it but no further details. He did say that it doesn't have parts diagrams.

Two Stars
Little new information and far too much gun control sermonizing. Not what I expect form this series and publisher!

Know the UZi
If you know the history of a firearm you are better able to manage its present day use, Hence, get this book, read it, and be a better end user.

Uzi
An interesting book even though I dont like the UZI.When I consider a firearm I judge it on 5 criteria:Design - Does it represent a peak in the design process?Yes, the magazine in the pistol grip with shrouded bolt had already been experimented with but the UZI was the best of the bunch made possible by the fact that Israel did not have to contend with a legacy industry (not brought out in the book)Weapon - Is it good for its intended purpose.Well the UZI failed along with all smg and the book brings this out with comparisons with the AK47.RevolutionaryDoes it introduce a new technology which is then widely copied. No, if any dues are to be paid they should go to Czechoslovakia which the book tips a hat at.Game ChangerDoes it affect the tactics of war.NoIconicIs it recognised by society at large.Yes, of course, the UZI is one of the weapons that has a certain magical quality in the minds of those who have never handled a weapon. Queue The Terminator. In summary, this is an interesting read particularly with regards to the mini and micro versions so I'm not going to knock the book, I just dont like UZIs, thats all.
