Wer [DVD]

Excellent unique Lycanthropic based picture.
The title of this dvd is probably giving people the wrong impression – hence the bad reviews. The German title “WER” is not an abbreviation for Werewolf in English it translates to “who”.The Polish title “Zwierz” translating as “Beast” is far more accurate in relation to the picture. To be clear this is not a werewolf picture, you will not see any humans transform into wolves. What you will see is an excellent picture based on “Lycanthropy” from the mythological POV to the real Scientific explanations to the Medical/Psychological condition which created the mythology. If you are only looking for pictures where snarling drooling wolves make an appearance then this is not for you.If you have some knowledge of history and what lead to the werewolf mythology then if you keep an open mind give it a chance,as it does start a bit slow, then you will find it is a great movie.I cannot think on any other picture which takes this POV.

Interesting an enjoyable horror
Different take on the genre, not very scary though. Well produced and acted.

This is an excellent film but not a traditional 'Werewolf' movie
This is an excellent film but not a traditional 'Werewolf' movie, however it at once encompasses and surpasses both elements and ties in to the historical legends of the Loup-Garou (or werewolf) mythology from France and reminds me very much of the real case of Mr X (Monsieur X - see the book The Beast Within: A History of the Werewolf by Adam Douglas). The focus is on the Lunar effects on the body and the lack of change physically but more mentally/psychologically which is again a nod to the Loup Garou legend. Do not expect bursting muzzles and lots of fur, but subtle changes in body and more importantly, attitude and a loss of humanity.Brutal and visceral at times as you would expect, this is a gem of a 'werewolf' movie which draws upon recorded historical incidents, medical conditions, and myth to weave a great story of just how easy it is for us to tip into that base animal nature we all try to hide from given the right triggers in either our body or brain chemistry.Watch, enjoy, and ask yourself the question - just how much in control are you really?

A few fresh ideas
To its credit, Wer tries to do something a little different with the well worn werewolf flick and is at least partially successful. The set up finds us in France, although almost everyone speaks English so subtitle dodgers needn't worry. A family are brutally slain in the opening moments by something or somebody and a local man is arrested and charged with the crime. A young attractive American woman and a young attractive English man get involved in the case in an effort to prove what really happened......It's not an actual found footage film as such but the whole thing they're going for here is that shaky cam, documentary style and it's pretty effective, bringing a grubby realism to a pretty absurd tale. The plot is kind of thin but there's just enough going on here to keep the interest levels up. They make the most of what's available to create some fine action sequences with decent effects. The acting (mostly) does the job and some fresh ideas mean this all adds up to brisk, enjoyable romp with a darker edge.

Pretty decent take on the werewolf genre.
Suspenseful at the start, plenty of things to make you think. Good casting, decent acting and a good sub plot to boot. Gore is not over the top, but on point. I enjoyed the film and recommend giving it a watch.

Unexpectedly Excellent
Clearly the werewolf genre has been done to (grisly) death, and there are few surprises with this outing (but there are still some), yet it remains an extremely enjoyable movie to watch and was well scripted, acted, directed etc. Good effects and very credible performances all round - nothing cheesy or straight-to-DVD about this (snarly) puppy. There are many, many less enjoyable ways to spend 90 minutes in the horror genre…If you’ve enjoyed any other werewolf movies, you will enjoy this as a cut above the rest I think. Give it a go and ignore the IMDB rating - more like an 8.0 or even higher in my book - it really made the werewolf genre mysterious, brutal, and even interesting again. No major surprises, just a good tale well told.

Nothing like a werewolf!
I really didn't enjoy this film. The guy that was meant to be a werewolf, was more like a mad man. Not very wolf like at all. Disappointing. If you want a good werewolf film, go with Silver Bullet, American Werewolf in London or Dog Soldiers. This is very poor compared to those.

Could have been better
I'm not that fond of this movie. I have seen better werewolf movies. This is not even a werewolf. More like a mad man. And I didn't like that they confused porphyry with lycanthorpy. Porphyria is a disease and it is more connected to vampires. Lycanthropy are werewolves.
