I read all 6 of them over and over again, savoring the rich storytelling and detailed and colorful characters. The magic system she has set up with the Sunrunners is not overdone and makes you want to learn more about the history of it. I love reading about all the different Princedoms. Dialogue seems natural and sex scenes are tame and very few...just the way I like my fantasy stories. This series has been one of my favorites for many years! It reminds me of the Dune series by Frank Herbert, I think, that was made into a movie. (I may not have his name right) I hope Hollywood never gets their claws into it because I fear they will never be able to do it justice! I highly recommend this book! Review: Captivating - This book captivated me almost 40 years ago and it took me way too long to be captivated again. Picked it up to re-read and Iโm glad I did. A great read with wonderful characters and an even better storyline, different from any other fantasy series Iโve read since.

Romantasy or Fantamance?
Dragon Prince, Melanie Rawn's first novel, was ahead of the fantasy/romance genre curve in 1988. Rawn decorates an epic fantasy core story with romantic trappings, and it works, most of the time. The early medieval fantasy world of Dragon Prince comes to life in vibrant Sunrunner magical colors. The environments, especially the desert, are depicted in fine detail, capturing the reader with sensuous descriptions. The book has a few minor issues: recurring emotional imagery and a lack of depth to many of the secondary characters. The main characters are vividly drawn, but the spotlight on them is a bit tight. Everyone seems a little dim compared to Rohan and Sioned, and I suppose that is the novel's romance side coming to the fore. The reader may get too much inside the head of the characters at some points. A lot of the narrative is filled with the internal monologue and deeply felt emotions of the characters. This tends to give the plot a stuttery feel as conflicts arise, characters ponder, then swoon or glower at each other, then ponder some more, then something else happens. The story is interesting, but not very complex. There is mostly one main thread of plot throughout, though there are many brief branches and callbacks. I think the story could have used a bit of pruning, especially since the general focus is so strong on the main characters. Any time a secondary character comes to the fore, it's not very rewarding, as they tend to be more sketchy and predictable. The frequent callbacks and rehashing of characters' feelings can be distracting, too. Although worded differently and often approached from different angles, some themes are visited repeatedly. Despite these issues, the plotting of the princes and the romance of the main characters is engaging enough to keep the pages turning. Dragon Prince is not for everyone, as it has far more romance and politics than action and adventure. Though few, the action sequences are lively and stimulating. I'm looking forward to checking out some of Melanie Rawn's other books set in the Dragon Prince world, as I have a feeling that the later novels may be even better.

An excellent read and great product.
I bought this book to replace a previous copy that was worn out. It arrive in excellent condition and before promised date. Its a great story of science fiction and Melanie Rawn is a great author. The story is of love, dragons, and mages and a prince and princess, in other words all the good stuff.

Great first book in a wonderful fantasy trilogy
Young Prince Rohan of the Desert is seen as scholarly and bookish--and no worthy successor to his warrior father, Prince Zehava. But he has no choice other than to learn, and learn fast, when his father suddenly dies. Besides learning how to be a ruling prince--and what kind he wants to be--Rohan must tread a careful dance as many--including his aunt, Lady Andrade of Goddess Keep, and High Prince Roelstra--have their own plans for his future. Having lived at Goddess Keep since childhood, Sioned of River Run has learned how to weave the sunlight and moonlight that are her birthright as a Sunrunner. But all that ends when Lady Andrade summons her to the Desert, intending Sioned to become the bride of her nephew, Prince Rohan. Caught between the Lady to whom she owes obedience and the prince who is fast claiming her heart, Sioned must walk a narrow path as she and Rohan pursue their dreams.

Still a Great Adventure
I read this so many years ago and I was happy to find it again. Reading it again was just as much fun as when I first read it and I had as much trouble trying to figure out how to pronounce the names. The characters are relatable and you can see the differences between the protagonist and antagonist. My hang up is trying to figure out how to balance a "religious calling" that is neutral with being a royal. And why the head of the group wanted to do it in the first place other than pride.

Great book. I love the Dragon Prince trilogy. It is a must add to any library. Princess Sioned is the Queen of Queens.

A friend wanted to read this, and I couldn't bear to part with my own copy, so I was pleased to find a second hand one in good condition as a Christmas present. This is the first part of a series, but stands well on its own. It was written in the days when perhaps Fantasy was rather more innocent than it seems to be today, but is none the worse for that. It is a good story, very well told, well populated with interesting characters, and with a well conceived plot. It has been one of my favourite books for almost twenty-five years, and is definitely recommended.

I think the best compliment I can give this book is that I'm now reading the 4th book in the series of 6. Dragon Prince draws you in quickly, makes you care for (and hate) all the right characters, and really sets up an epic tale. I had to purchase the paperback secondhand. Please republish this classic and the books that follow it! If you find a copy, grab it!

I read this book initially in the 1990's and of all the books I have read I have bought several copies I am actually on my fourth copy. Having worn out three other copies. I also give this book to other avid fantasy readers. I did pick up the first copy because Anne McCaffery had indeed written a squip about it. The book stands alone but if you really want to read the rest of the series it is worth while. There is 'magic', political intrigue, revenge and war. There is actually a strong family element of powerful relations princes, dragons and gold. I do cherish the fact that I have recommended this book to several people and it is a bit like letting them into a secret.
