A cute book for teaching similes. My only issue is that the vast majority of the similes use the word "as". If you are trying to teach that a simile is a comparison that uses the word "like" or "as", it's a bit one sided. But it's a cute story.

My dog is as smelly as dirty socks
As part of my friends and family unit I read this book to my preschool children. They loved the colorful pictures and creative objects used to describe and illustrate family members. The children then created their own art projects to take home and share with their own families using precut colored paper, pastels, markers, painted clothes pins, and glue. I would recomend this book to all educators and parents of young children.

Unique Teaching Tool
My Dog is Smelly...is an effective tool for understanding similes. It is unique in two ways: The similes use a variey of objects beyond the obvious to represent personality types, such as, "strong as stone" and "faster than a calculator". Secondly, it leads nicely into a simile writing exercise that also reinforces the characteristics of personality traits.

This book is as brilliant as a lightbulb!
As an art teacher, I was delighted at this approach to assemblage. It's clever and adorable in general, but can be used as a juming off point for so many different themes: collage, metaphor/simile, recycled junk art, found objects, portraits, etc. It practically dares you to create your own personalized portraits of family and friends, complete with amusing symbols. Highly recommended!

Great to teach similes!
I love this book to teach similes. I have used it with third and fifth graders. Students find it cute and funny. After reading this book I have students create their own family portraits, and describe them using similes. They love this activity and come up with great similes and very creative portraits.

Super book to learn about similes.
What an enjoyable way to teach similes. It is engaging for any age. The young like the funny pictures and the older students like the humour of the similes while not feeling the book is too juvenile.

Not quite the book I thought it would be but still funny. Maybe my son will enjoy it a bit more when he's older.
