U2 - WE WILL FOLLOW: THE LEGENDARY BROADCASTS SET

Pleasant Surprise
I wonder how many people made the same mistake as me? i.e. When this apparently excellent bargain was released I avoided it (until it recently became even cheaper) due to the awful sound quality of the Clash 4CD live set released by the same company. We are spoilt in Britain - if a live radio session is released we know it will be good, particularly if it is BBC. However, there have recently been a lot of American radio sessions released that have a very poor sound quality. I know that The Clash are supposed to sound raw, but if I could travel back in time to 1979 just to see them live, I wouldn't cover my ears with mufflers and ask the people nearest to me to talk at the tops of their voices.Anyway, rant over, this U2 set sounds really good. In my opinion their first three albums were easily their best and these live discs are from that era so every song is excellent. And they were, of course, brilliant live. Win, win.

On the verge of selling out
Recorded when U2 were on the up,and unfortunately for me,their output got worse. The first 2 albums, both of which feature well here, were, for me,their best. Then came war and nothing was ever the same again. For the price, this really is great stuff, buy it and listen to what U2 sounded like before they sold out. The impetus of the early albums would never be matched again, and I,for 1,think it's a shame.

U2 at their live best, before stadium mediocrity
In the early 80's it seemed you could not turn over to BBC2 without there being a U2 concert on. Full of live raw energy, i can picture Bono climbing the lighting rig as I listen to these. Alas, that raw energy dissipated as stadiums beckoned and Bono became the self appointed 'Politician for the People'. Relive the glory days!!!!

Early U2 Live
U2 are always best heard live and this 4 cd set takes you back to the early days - one for the fans definitely at a great price although not an official release

Bootleg recordings
A clear bootleg that benefits relistening. The edits are unfortunate. Bono saying "we're home now" would normally apply to Dublin rather than Boston, USA. The leaving of the stage sounds far too early in the nature of stage-craft. It's a curiosity however poor the final edit. 1982-1983 is the time line here. Favourites such as I Will Follow, Gloria and New Year's Day sound relatively appealing. Music for the masses. It would be great for an official U2 live release. There are some fine live recordings on October (Deluxe version). This 4 CD release has its moments however. U2 are young kids in these recordings. Bono seems to have no centredness evenso this U2; learning and breathing the cogs of the music industry.

Epoque bénie !
Disques 1 & 2: Boston. Disque 3:New York. Disque 4:US Festival.
