good book
I teach guitar part time. You'll need to learn book 1 and 2 first. The reason being it takes time to learn to read and to develop your muscle memory in your hands. Starting from scratch it can take 2 to 3 years to get through books 1 to 3. If you have experience and can already play chords it can take less than one year to get through all the books. The books are well done. If you have the determination to finish out the books you'll have a solid foundation to move into an advanced style of your liking. A good instructor will help you properly play your guitar. Teach you the rules and all the little things that come with learning a guitar that a book can't show. Also keep in mind a more expensive instructor will not help you play better as its up to you to develop your muscle memory.

Book seems good. No CD included.
I like the book but there was no CD. I don't want to return the book but would like the CD sent--then I'll change my rating!

Great book!
This is a great book - will help me move forward! They made a great decision to move away from DVDs -- it's much easier to use the helpful links provided!

This book gave me more challenging music to play. It is methodically teaching me more techniques on the guitar in music form as well as tab.

For the advanced student
First off, this book is hard to find in music or book stores. I finally found it on Amazon and I'm thrilled to have it as a teaching tool for my students that have arrived at this level. The book covers a lot of material and gives the students the tools it takes to go further in music and the guitar. I recommend this to any guitar instructor or somebody who is ready for book 3.

great book series for beginners
I have all 3 books of the series. I have tried other books to learn on my own and this one explains the basics better then any other series I have tried.

Book 3 - not too bad
Have been working through the Hal Leonard books for about a year. Have enjoyed learning the basics and have found them easy to follow. I like the mix of standard music notation and TAB. The first two books in the series were very good and would recommend them to anyone - I have been using them to teach myself and have found the CDs helpful. The third book is a good continuation the only drawback is the Barre chord section is lacking in content: I would have liked more practice tunes to play using the basic E and A type barre chords. I feel the book progresses too quickly at this point, after a brief intro to the basic barre chord shapes you turn the page and find yourself confronted with example tunes that mix it all up (7,m,m7,maj7) huge steps to take in just a couple of pages!! Apart from this the book is excellent.

Recomendable
