To save an empire by daring greatly...
The Roman Empire of Constantine the Great was nearly the zenith of its power, but maintaining the empire would prove to be beyond the capabilities of his successors. Julius, one of the surviving males of the Constantine line, would be sent to Gaul in AD 357, hoping to defeat a major Germanic invasion. Given the close-quarter politics of his era, it was unclear whether or not Julius was being set up to fail, or even being sent to die..."Strasbourg AD 357" is an Osprey Campaign Series book, well authored by Raffaele D'Amato and Andrea Frediani. The authors dissect the politics of the period and the military problem that Julius was sent to solve. The climax of Julius' campaign would be the battle of Strasbourg, where his small army faced a Germanic horde on the edge of the empire. On the outcome of the battle would rest the immediate fate of Gaul. The run-up to the battle itself concerns lots of detail about the respective armies and their weapons and tactics. Those readers not fascinated by the Roman Empire may find themselves anxious to get on to the actual battle. The text is nicely supported with lots of period imagery, modern illustrations, and battle maps. Recommended to students of the period.

CLEAR AND CONCISE
Decent run through of the Julian's issues and the general state of the Western Roman empire leading up to the battle. The battle itself is covered in pretty fine detail. Lots of illustrations, both colour and B&W. Lots of info and well worth a read.
