Work Well in Protecting Cycling Shoes with Carbon Soles
Protect carbon soles from damage from SPD cleats. Slight convex shape adds just enough height to make cleats easier to clip in if you're using mountain bike shoes with stack height for walking. Seem expensive for a thin piece of metal, but I guess the price includes the cost of design, which is excellent.

One of the top 5 things you can do to improve your ride!
I must admit I only bought these because I was watching a video review of the top 5 or top 10 things you can do to improve your riding/bike. The Crank Brothers bike shoe shield ranked right near the top. I bought two packs thinking that one pack contained a metal shield and a spacer pad. I was surprised, pleasantly so, to find that one pack contained two metal shield (as seen in the pics) and instructions. I opted to swap out my cleats at the same time. It looked like the cleat grub screws would not thread in enough. Well I was wrong. As Crankbrothers' say they "...will not interfere with your mounting..." I use the TIME ATAC cleats and TIME MX4 as well as some older TIME ATAC pedals. The crankbrothers work great with these cleats, shoes/boots, and pedals. In fact it is as though you are both clipped on and floating at the same time. You have super easy side to side movement. Exceptional clip in access and very easy release. I am extremely pleased. For the money an improvement you should not think twice about doing. In the pack you get the two metal spacers only. I had purchased the cleats and hardware separately. Now I have a spare set new and in my bike tool box. Thank you for such a great product!!! Three thumbs up. john

Good for ATAC pedals too.
I use these with Time ATAC pedals, which also have protruding brackets and had been scratching soles of my shoes around cleats. These shields are thin enough to not interfere with the clip-in action and do a great job with protecting the soles. They don't slip or require any adjustments, just install and forget.

Work Great, Resolving the funtional whoes in the "Egg Beater" concept while they damage customers expensive riding shoes !
At this point (Just install several days ago) function much better than other shims used in the past. They appear to be designed to allow these protrusions on the bottom side of the bronze cleat, to engage the sole of the shoe, thus may be effectively resisting cleat rotation, while "Stepping ... IN or OUT, That's a good thing. The material is thicker, wear resistant, than the run of the mill shims out there today. Note ! This is the only type of pedal I've ever used. I did not realize the "Spring" Contacts the inner 4 contacts of the pedals engaging ability have damaged all my SIDI shoes soles. I would have thought Crank Brothers would have had provided these metal shields years ago, to avert damaging the soles of their customers expensive riding shoes. The nature of the clamping action and reduction of the "Egg Beater" hot spot to the rider may be reduced with the use to the new "paddle" "Candy" type of pedals. However shoe wear may eventually widen the clearance gap of the shoes sole and the flat surfaces of the paddle type of pedal causing the hot spot to reappear without installing the "Crank Brothers Candy Tread Contact Sleeves" which tend to crack when installing on the shaft end of the pedal. Because the "Egg Beater" design by comparison to other pedals out there today, where shoe wear may not negatively effect the comfort and thus relieve the propensity of "Hot Spot" because of wider shoe contact surfaces, those of other manufactures pedals, are not "as nearly" impacted by "Shoe Wear". I wonder if Crank Brothers might eventually scrap or redesign the "Egg Beater" pedal to lessen the damage to it's customers shoes. I wonder too, if this company is willing compensate those customers who have damaged their shoes over the years ?

Definitely seems worth the little extra.
I haven't put a ton of miles with these shields installed but I can definitely say it feels easier to clip in with these on. They also have a bit of a springy curve to them which seems to keep the cleat a bit more stable when fixing them to your shoe.
