True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter

Harry Swings Cole
Cole Porter IS the Great American Songbook, or at least a huge part of it. Harry Connick is an amazing talent. I first heard him live before he started his rise to stardom when he was playing small clubs around the country. So, you combine the brilliant work of Cole Porter with the matured talent of Harry Connick and this is what you get -- an amazing compilation of familiar songs done in bold, strong, modern arrangements that punch the tunes. Connick did all of the arranging and orchestrations and plays a lot of piano on this album. It swings hard with a distinct New Orleans flair and is probably the best Cole Porter compilation in recent years. The five-star rating is for the material and the arrangements. The packaging is terrible, especially for a Verve recording. Cheap cardboard sleeve. But I generally have to repackage anything I get from Amazon anyway because if it comes in a plastic jewel case it's almost always broken in shipment. So, I just take the cheap cardboard packaging and convert it to a regular CD case. It actually looks very nice using the liner notes as the cover.

Beautiful music
I’m a romantic and I love Harry Connick Junior’s voice and style of singing. The choice of songs and the production values on this album are top notch. ❤️❤️❤️

Harry swings with the best. This up-tempo, Big Band collection is awesome ! I can't stop listening.
I knew Harry as mostly a slow and easy crooner with a velvet voice, but he has stepped it up with this collection ! Harry had to keep up with all that brass in his band and he definitely rose to the challenge. Even his piano had to keep up with the pace and did (of course). His rendition of "Anything Goes" is right up there with the best (Sinatra, Sammy Davis). I never really liked the song "True Love" before, but Harry's rendition blows me away and it's one of my favorites on the CD. Overall, this CD is the best that I've bought in a long time. I hope Harry releases another "Big Band" swing album. I know that I would love to add that to my collection, too.

Amazing album but faulty packaging
I give this album 5 stars. Harry is the best at what he does. However, my album upon first opening it had, dust, fingerprints galore on it. I was shocked. My album sleeves were both torn. The record skipped because of the dust and fingerprints. This is the first time this has ever happened when I purchased an album.

COLE PORTER HIMSELF WOULD BE PROUD
So sensational is Harry Connick, Jr.’s True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter that while listening to it I felt like I was being swept up and magically transported back to the smoke-filled dance halls and nightclubs of pre- and post-World War II America… In the booklet accompanying this CD, Connick says that “Cole Porter songs taught me about love, sensuality and elegance…” It’s obvious Connick learned those lessons well, giving Porter’s songs a refreshing new lease on life with his unique vocal talent and mastery of the piano keyboard. Connick is brilliantly supported by a supremely talented group of musicians that have executed orchestrations like I haven’t heard in quite some time. And Connick’s instrumental version of Begin the Beguine is nothing short of amazing. This is what musical talent is all about… Cole Porter himself would be proud of what Connick & Co. have done to reintroduce his already-timeless songs to new generations.

It’s OK
Harry Konnick is always good yet his arrangement of Cole Porter’s songs did not move me the way Cole Porter’s own voice or whomever sang on my Dad’s recordings in the last century did.

Completely enjoyable. The quality is unmatched and the songs will rekindle days when you wore a younger men's or women's clothes.
