The most comprehensive, step-by-step, hands-on creative workbook for creating art with Sharpie markers. Review: Fun book on Sharpie marker art - This seems like a book that markets Sharpie markers but it goes a bit deeper than that. Timothy Goodman is an illustrator, design and AD from New York and he loves using those Sharpie markers. This book is about what you can draw on with Sharpies and features the artworks of other artists who use these markers. The book's written in a conversational tone with big fonts that are accompanied by fun art. After a few pages showing you what are the types of Sharpie markers available in the market, it goes into the history, and then the different types of creative work created with them. There are artists who use the markers to draw, doodle, write, decorate gifts, create murals, draw on skateboards, on plates and other objects that can be drawn on. There are themes that you can explore, such as creating patterns, or drawing on objects that are discarded or neglected around the house. Then it features artists who have created works with that particular theme. The main thing to note is this is more of an inspirational type of book rather than instructional. The instructions come in the form of one page with brief few paragraphs describing the themes or styles you can use with the Sharpies, followed by examples. Overall, it's an interesting book that doodlers, sketchers or marker users might like. (See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my desertcart profile for the link.) Review: Even with its brevity & overview/synopsis style I really liked this book! - A good portion of the book was photographic examples of work from artists working in the genre, with short explanations of artistic prompts and jumping off points. The author's past teaching experience, coupled with his lighthearted, conversational tone, made it feel as if your peppy friend just stopped by to color with you.

Sharpie Art Workshop expands the mind beyond simply making posters to the wide world of art and design.
This will be helpful to anyone who uses Sharpies because it displays the versatility of the product. Numerous people who have created art and designs with Sharpie pens are shown with their work. Sharpies force you to commit to the line. The spontaneity that results is what makes it fun. Anybody old enough to hold a pencil can use one. Because of the lasting results, parental guidance is definitely advised if you don't want "free styling" on your walls. So whether seasoned professional, who feels their work has gone stale, or a beginner, there's something to take away from the Sharpie Art Workshop. The different nibs now available start at very fine, and go to very bold, in an array of colors. Metallics expand the possibilities. Depending on the specific use, marking is possible on ceramic, fabric, metal, wood, canvas, etc. Lots of summer camp projects could be done, especially designs on small stones, popular right now. Sharpies are not just for making yard sale signs. But, if that's your goal, this might be the spark that brings in the buyers.

Disappointing if you're interested in practical tips
Kind of fun to page through, and has lots of links to artists' pages. Heavy on lettering for my taste. I was really hoping for practical tips on getting the ink to stick to various types of surfaces. This is more like, "You could draw on your shoes! Or your hat!" One of my three stars is just because the author seems like a nice guy. Wouldn't have bought it if I'd seen the whole thing in a bookstore.

Timothy Goodman's book about a writing utensil will arouse a creative creature from even the most linear of souls. Less about the brilliance of his own content and designs, (but let's be real, they are brilliant), more about the way each page propels the reader toward action. Deceptively simple in plot, Sharpie Art Workshop remains true to its title and really is a workshop. Maybe fellow designers and artists delight in the whimsy and charm of the illustrations and the novelty of "sharpie art" as some recommendations highlight below. But, non 'creatives' like me, might find that their world really is transformed. There's a page dedicated to the scribble. Let it not just be a lesson in scribble, but a lesson in seeing the world and art differently. You'll find yourself doodling out a post-it-note comic and discover the problem solving piece need for your next work dilemma.

It contains a lot of information you can get for free on youtube or looking at the back of the sharpie markers packs. It only contains artist that use sharpies to make simple designs any kid can do or duchamp tendies to draw a mustache on the mona lisa. It lacks any information on how to use sharpies as a medium.

Informative and full of ideas
I may have been expecting more of a how-to with this, but wasn’t disappointed in finding it to be more a guide to what can be done with Sharpies. I especially liked the profiles of various artists and examples of their work. I may not do much with these markers in the long run, but it is nice to have a reference of what is possible.

Neue Inspirationen!

creativity: the art of having fun
"Don't worry about what you want to do as much as who you want to work for" is the phrase Timothy always says to his student at SVA (School of Visual Arts in New York City). This phrase, I think, is the foundation of all the book: a fantastic travel through the inspiring works of Tim and other great artist as for example: Jessica Walsh and Shantell Martin. In Sharpie Art Workshop are covered a series of creative techniques your Sharpie makers can be used followed by explanatory exercises but what it's most important you have a lot fun in trying these techniques and you can't wait to start use your Sharpies on every surfaces you can imagine. So buy your copy and start to having fun!
