It's about night vision.
This is probably the first piece of equipment a new astronomer should get once they decide to go out at night to see the stars. These are the only LED flashlights that our astronomy club recommends. The point of red LED lights is to preserve not only your own night vision while working at your telescope but to preserve the night vision of everyone around you too. This light has a dimming control wheel so you can set the brightness where you want it. Once you get used to working under soft red light, you will find that a flash of white light is actually painful, and leaves you back in the dark. Using the Rigel Starlite shows that you know what you are doing and that you care about your fellow observers. PS: The red LED lights on the headbands are the worst! They are way too bright and can't be dimmed and they blind your neighbor on the field. Use these lights; they're the best.

Works very nicely
This red flashlight is handy to have for night time potty trips to keep from burning out the eyes with bright white light at night. Seems like a quality unit.

Four Stars
Great light for getting up at night and not ruining your night vision.

As a new amateur astronomer, I figured I would ...
As a new amateur astronomer, I figured I would need a Red LED Light to look at my star maps. It gets the job done, but you need to set it at the top two settings to work well enough to see the information on pages. It works well enough for a beginner.

New favorite red light for Astronomy
This flashlight is well made, and I love the dimmer switch that provides variable brightness. There is barely any light on the lowest setting, and at its highest there is easily enough light to light up your work space. My old flashlight was one fixed brightness, which often made it too bright to read star charts. The dimmer switch can be moved in either direction, with the off position being in the middle. There is a distinct position that you can feel when the flashlight is off, and it takes a little bit of pressure to turn it on (you will feel a click). It is easy to turn on and off in the dark, and I have not had any issues with leaving it on.I did purchase the model with no white light. While I do miss having red and white light available in one flashlight, I am happy that there is no chance of accidentally turning on the white light while observing.

The best 'astro flashlight' I've found so far
I really like the fine adjustment of the brightness, and the way it hangs around the neck.A 9v battery lasts for a long time! .... but it does fail suddenly, so have a spare battery at a star party!

Defective Product
The brightness control wheel on this light broke off. I did not get to use it. This is way overpriced. There are better red flashlights out there.

Flimsy plastic small batteries
This is a bit flimsy, uses super small aaa batteries and I would not purchase again. It’s working now but the first time I drop it on cement or hard floor or driveway it will break I’m thinking.
