Timely and thought provoking
Though originally considered controversial, I find Said’s contemplation of the notion of “the other” to be timely and spot on. I think he’s an excellent writer- not over the top but to the point. A seminal book on the subject.

More than calligraphy !
The answer to the book's title is richly provided within. Islamic art - after dealing eloquently with the wrong-headed notions of Islam being against figural representation or only worthy our gaze when it fits western ideas of classical art - is what people bring to it. The illustrations are gorgeous! We are grateful to Professor Shaw for this signal contribution to art history and Islamic Studies!
