pictures tell the story
I am a big fan of Laura Vaccaro Seeger. I love how her pictures always tell most (if not all) of the story. Why? is no different. Why? gives opportunity for language development as there are many questions that can be asked and answered for each page. The illustrations, created using watercolors, are beautiful. I love how Seeger brings out the fact that sometimes we just don’t know Why something (like the death of a bird in the winter) happens. For those of you who work with children with tender hearts, you need to know that the illustrations do indicate the death of a bird in the winter. The death is not mentioned in the text but it is in the picture of one page. I would not hesitate to add Why? to my K-12 Christian School library. I will be including it in my Mock Caldecott unit later this fall. I borrowed a copy of Why? from my local public library. This is my honest review.

Beautiful illustrations.
I really loved this book. So great to teach our children to ask why. The pictures were so pretty. And sometimes we just don’t know why.

A Treasure
We have TONS of board books. This is definitely a favorite. I would buy this for every parent with a young toddler I know.

A real gem.
This book is masterfully written. Using fewer than 100 words, the author tells a complete story. Readers are allowed to use the pictures to figure out what precedes each "Why?" A different author would have provided that information and we would not have had this gem of a book.

Nice story about caring.
Bunny is constantly asking friend Bear the question "Why?" Words are sparse but the pictures give the readers a chance to discuss what's going on in the picture. At the end, friend Bear has one question he has no answer for. And it's time for him to leave. When Bunny protests, it's Bear's turn to ask "Why?" Cute. I'm sure many parents who are constantly hearing this question from their young ones will identify with this book.
