This book is a fun adventure with emotional content.
I bought this book for my 7 year old grandson. I had watched the movie on TV, & felt that the movie was too scary for his age. So I read the book! It was very good, & not scary. It is sad at the beginning, because the little girl’s (Nim) mother dies by disappearing into the ocean. Nim & her father are living on an undiscovered island.

Fun Read!
This book became an instant favorite for my kids! We ended up reading the other two books in the series, too, and they were all great! It’s a kid-appropriate adventure book that the whole family can enjoy.

Sweet Survival Story
I loved the relationship that Mom had with Selkie, Fred, and Chica. They seem like great friends to have! I also love that she was raised to be a self-sufficient problem solver. Glad she got to stay!

Alone on an island
A fun girl's adventure, with a girl protagonist who can fend for herself in just about any situation -- picture My Side of the Mountain with a girl on an island.Nim and her scientist father live happily on a tropical island. When her father leaves on one of his frequent scientific jaunts in his boat, Nim happily takes care of her home and pets -- until her father is delayed by mechanical problems and a storm. By email, Nim contacts an adventure writer named Alex, who flies (and boats) to Nim's island to help. The movie that was made from this book is pretty true to the original plot, except for the character of Alex, who in the book was not nearly as fearful of going out in the world as she was portrayed in the movie. It was so overdone in the movie that you couldn't believe that she could actually overcome her fears and leave her home.A fun adventure for girls 7-12. I can picture 5- and 6-year-old girls enjoying it too, if it were read to them. For those who want to read other Wendy Orr books, see my review for Mokie and Bik, a hilarious book about twins who live on a houseboat, for children 4-8.

I've worn out the book already!!!
I am 8, and I enjoy this book so much that I have already read it 5 times. I plan on reading it again! Nim is adventurous, has so many animal friends who actually listen to her, and she knows so many things about how to climb volcanos, and take care of her cuts and such. Her dad is a real scientist and he teaches her how to help him with his science work. I want to learn more about science and survival skills now.

A Great Read for Young and Old, alike
This is a great read for children and adults, alike. I read this before giving it to my 7 year old grandaughter and I fell in love with all of the characters and the animals. What a delightful book of an island adventure! It has action, mystery, adventure, excitement and love. It teaches you to use your imagination to visualize the island and its animals. It encourages bravery, commitment and learning about new places and things. Books like this one encourage children to read more. What else can you want from a good book?

This is a great book for nine and ten year olds
This is a great book for nine and ten year olds. I love everything about it EXCEPT THE COVER. It used to have a nice pencil drawing by Kerry Millard that matched the inside illustrations but has since been replaced by a scene from the (terrible) movie that it was turned into. When will publishers understand that most kids like to read and don't need a sensational cover to be interested in a book.
