The great crime novelist Donald E. Westlake was so prolific that he required several pen names to attach to books that covered all the writing styles at his command. Much loved by many was Richard Stark, Westlake's moniker for the author who wrote about a deliciously enigmatic professional thief named Parker. Parker has shown up in several movie adaptations, but Parker is the first to identify him with that name. Even though hulking bulldog Jason Statham plays him with the brute force and inelegant craft that has made the actor such a predictable action hero, Parker neatly captures the essence of the man that Westlake/Stark painted on the page. Parker is ostensibly based on the Parker novel Flashfire , though its plot is essentially the same kind of revenge tale all the other Parker character movies have been. After a well-planned heist (a terrific sequence staged at the Ohio State Fair), Parker's cohorts double-cross him and leave him for dead. But he recovers like the superhuman criminal hero he is and goes on a laser-focused quest to get back his share of the score--nothing more, nothing less. If it so happens that he kills a bunch of worse bad guys and ends up with far more than was owed him along the way, well, Parker won't complain. Veteran director Taylor Hackford more than carries the weight for both Parker and Statham, crafting set pieces and entertaining crime fantasies right up to the inevitable happy ending for our felonious yet principled protagonist. Parker makes his way from Ohio to New Orleans to Palm Beach, among other places, in tracking down the gang that jacked him. Each setting has a distinct sense of place, and we root for Parker in exactly the right way to show that bad guys can often be good even when they're doing terrible things. The Palm Beach third act is first rate, not least because of Jennifer Lopez, who plays a lonely real-estate agent who haplessly teams with Parker for some less than predictable shenanigans. Lopez seems to be hoping for the same kind of impact she made in Steven Soderbergh's terrific Elmore Leonard adaptation Out of Sight way back in 1998. Though Parker is not nearly as great a movie, Lopez truly shines. The same goes for an interesting and committed supporting cast that includes Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, Patti LuPone, Bobby Cannavale, and a thoroughly ravaged-looking Nick Nolte. Lots of movies have made heroes out of criminals--yay! the bad guy wins!--and Parker makes a fine entry to the world of violent, fun fantasies in which crooks come out on top. Statham's line featured in the Parker trailer pretty much describes his ethos as well as the movie's slick take on crime-does-pay: "I don't steal from people who can't afford it, and I don't hurt people who don't deserve it." Would that all Hollywood action movies could carry the same credo. --Ted Fry Based on the Richard Stark novels, Parker is a thief who lives his life by a code of integrity. If crossed, he will go to the ends of the earth to make it right and get even. Decent Action Movie
Not your typical Jason Statham movie, but then again maybe it actually was. Jason Statham plays "Parker" a thief with certain principals. He gets tricked out of his share on a heist and then seeks revenge. The plot is easy to follow and of course you can already tell how the movie will, but that is actually not hindering this flick from being quite entertaining. Jennifer Lopez plays the female counter part and does a good job - especially compared to some of her other movies. She plays an unsuccessful real estate agent in this movie. Nick Nolte plays a role in this movie, too. He does not need to do a lot of acting, just be himself. So, it is a good mix of actors that make this movie entertaining. Besides seeing a lot of blood in this movie, there are some funny scenes here and there. The mix of action, fun, and just regular story is really good. Definitely worth watching, but not a must see.

Excellent Action Movie
On par with some of his others; but this was so much more exciting and humanly. The inclusion of the RE’s well known actress, homelife and Mother (Patti Lapone) & her cute little semi important Pup. Mr Stratham(sp) came across better than his usual kool/tough/capable character😘👍

Cheap Thrills
Parker character based on Donald Westlake novel. $5 bargain. Very nice scene of the lead actress in her underwear. Not a bad little genre film.

Utterly Unexceptional, Mildly Entertaining Actioner
'Parker' is a fairly anonymous, formulaic entry in a heist-action genre already rife with fairly anonymous, formulaic films. The plot is a stock revenge piece (and at times, highly implausible at that). The narrative is clumsily paced, with characters like Nolte's coming in and then seemingly disappearing without a trace. Nonetheless, I don't regret giving the two hours of my time to watch it since in the end it ably ticks most of the boxes for a solid, if disposable, action movie: explosions, gunshots, hand-to-hand combat, slick cars, and comely female leads. The plot follows a thief's attempt to get even with the crew who stole his take and tried to kill him after their last job. His efforts to exact revenge on his mob-connected former colleagues put him and his loved ones at risk, and he leaves a healthy stack of weapon-wielding thugs in his wake. He eventually zeroes in on his targets in Palm Beach, Florida, where most of the movie's action takes place. The characters are one-dimensional, the dialogue generally lifeless and trite. Each character possesses a single, basic desire, and no time at all is given to anyone's backstory or past. Jason Statham, all menace and steely-eyed stare, is always fun to watch, but he never needs to get out of second gear as he applies his 'righteous tough guy' trope to the eponymous thief. The most nuanced character, and the film's best performance, comes from Jennifer Lopez as a feisty, flirty Palm Beach real estate agent who gets herself wound up in Parker's scheming and stays on board for a pay off of her own. Supporting players drift in and out unremarkably and sometimes inexplicably, but this is principally a simple story about one man's need to redress a wrong. And it's in the pulsating, bloody moments when the movie shines. The action scenes are gripping, particularly the opening set-piece and a well-choreographed hotel room fight. The director does a solid job of evoking Palm Beach, its vibrant colors and lazy luxury. Overall, the film has considerable shortcomings but manages to be an enjoyable watch.

A fantastic movie to watch again and again.
Parker is a fantastic piece of cinema based on a novel by Westlake. Parker (Jason Statham) is a man with his own disciplines and principles though being on the wrong side of law. At one point ; he is deceived by Melander and his group over sharing money. They try hard to kill Parker by pushing him off the moving SUV and shooting him badly when Parker disagrees with their next project. When they leave him at the road side pond thinking that he is dead ; Parker is fortunately rescued by a tomato farmer. Parker quickly recovers and starts hunting for Melander and his team. This movie will make you so much emotional that; at one point of time you literally want to enter the television screen and punch the bad guys on their faces. The movie is very picturesque; Palm island and all. Jennifer Lopez does a fantastic job of supporting Parker. Story moves very briskly and not even a single moment in the movie is dull and boring. Supporting actors are very nice. Editing, background music, dialogues, action; everything is first class. A must have collection in your home DVD library.

DVD Parker
