Cool Tent, But not for Everyone
Surprise there isn’t any review and that’s hard to find one anywhere...6/8/20 update, let's mention the cons first, if you still interested you can move on :)Took it for a 4 days camp; 8,500 feet, got sun, rain, thunderstorm, strong wind gust, and few snow drop; so lucky that can test the tent for all the weathers and found out this tent isn't for everyone.First, I know this is a 3 seasons tent, but the gap is not consistent on the outer tent, it leave 1 inch or more gap at some area, so cold draft will easily slip in, and I had tried tighten it, it just won't go low enough, which make your tent super toasty under the sun and a fridge at nightThe gap will lead to the second issue, there is mini ground sheet comes with the tent which is for the center of the tent, you can leave your gears and shoes there; however, only if it is sunny, the tent perform really poorly during rain on the mini ground sheet part (maybe is mine have issue) due to the gap between the outer tent and the ground is the highest among the whole tent, and it doesn't fully extend underneath the two inner tent, so if you don't have a ground sheet, it is 100 times worst. Even with my ground sheet, the rain will just slip in and get you gear wet, and also since you need to go thru that to get in your two inner tents, it will be always muddy and dirty under rain; because the height drop very quickly when you reach the inner tent, you will have a hard time to change up since you can't use the center section when rainThe gap at the doors also means in a cold night a heater is useless, all the heat will leak out unless you stand with inches next to it; and since the two inner tents isn't that big (no space for heater after a 40 inches wide mattress unless you want your stuff get burnt), you can't fit one inside, so make sure you get a high R value mattress and matching temperature sleeping bagTalking about mattress, if you are tall (6 ft+) don't get thick mattress (3-4 inches should be the max), otherwise your feet will easily touch the end of the tent, which is super cold at nightGet a second hand to help you set up, the video show it is super easy, well yes if it is under perfect controlled condition, the tent was all lay out perfectly before pumping, that's why it will stand up with ease; I can guarantee this will never happen when a user take it out the packed bag. It is 6 meters long, so you will need to pump it up first and walk around it to make sure nothing was tangled and pull the air chamber away the tent so it can stand up properly, then is the turn to peg the stakes and hock up the ground sheet to the D rings under the tent... it won't be much faster than traditional tent... and so do the take down process, it is quick for the chamber to lose the air, just few seconds, but you need to carefully fold and place the chamber, squeeze the air out, it all take time... unless you don't want to fit in the bag (not very big, unless you follow the instruction and pack it correctly, it will not fit, no room for error, precise German measurement)And I had mention about very hot under sun, our campground is about 8,500 feet and high 70s during the first day I believe, not very hot; but even with the four vents open, the tent become a warm sauna within hour, you will have a hard time sleeping inside during the day, get in under trees or you will need to roll up the outer tentThe good side is it really have no issue with the wind, one day the wind was like 20 mph, didn't move an inch, I didn't even peg the reinforce rope, the air chamber is strong. It there is no a single drop of rain leak to the inner tent (other than the mini ground sheet...) when the thunderstorm hit us whole night, it was very heavy rain, load enough to keep me awake whole nightI'm not sure what group of camper will use this tent, it doesn't really have enough space for a family that more than 4 (just enough for us 3), each inner tent is ideal for 2, the height of the inner tent is really short so it is just a sleeping tent which I don't think most of the family will want it; and it is too heavy for backpacker, if you are traveling in a group it will be better to just get an individual tent. I'm just confuse... I want to like it, I been following it since its release years ago, but after using it, I struggled, at least it is definitely not for my family. My advise:1. Get a Double Action Pump2. Get a Ground Sheet3. Do not try to set it up on the day of your camp, prepare it first4. Keep reading the instructions... it is not simple...Wish it can be made in Germany not China :)Here is my experience:It came inside a sliver bag, interesting packaging (mine was taped at one end because it was damaged)Two separated bags one hold the air chamber and the other keep the rest of the stuff. Don’t open them to take a look until you are ready to set it up, it will take you a lot of time to untangle the chamber if you didn’t place it properly... which happen to me...Here came the unpleasant part... Heimplanet... please find someone that didn’t design the tent to write the instruction... it is very confusing, need more pictures and more details... for a $1,200 tent actually should be pack ready to go instead of have owner set it up connecting all the parts... not everyone is as good as the Germans... and it will be better if can color coded the connection pointAnyways, the instruction will tell you to inflate the chamber slightly and start attaching the inner tent then the outer tent; for someone that had never saw the tent before... it’s not the ideal method, and the tent is 6 meters long (do it indoor if you can or find a day that has no wind), I found it easier to understand after fully inflated the chamber and it seems easier for me to hook up the rings when it is upright. Each inner tent only need to connect the 4 corners (closest to the zipping door) to the air chamber; the rest all connect to the outer tent (unless you don’t want to use the outer tent)Only one set of rings are colored in green (one on each side and one on each inner tent), again... can save a lot of time if the connecting point can be colored, which will help if you don't inflate it fullyAfter you set hook up everything then you can start pumping it (according to the instruction's procedure), and here is why you should just get a manual pump; I had a Coleman quick pump, which takes over a minute to partially inflate the air chamber (not enough to let it stand on its own), and not matter how much longer you try to pump it, it will not inflate more. I bought myself a Double Action pump and with few pumps (from the partially inflated condition) it lift the whole tent up with easeIt came with an adapter so you can lock it tight with your pump's hose (which you can't with an electric one, at least not mine and I can't find any one on market that fit...), don't lose it!!!You can fit a double bed inside each tent, I tried the Intex Inflatable Camping Mattress (76" x 50" x 9.5") and it fit very well; have few more inches leg room, but the width I will not go any wider since the two end of the tent are narrower, I think 52" to 53" will be the max for body length mattress
