Sonya's Chickens Hardcover – Picture Book, August 11, 2015

Wonderful storyline that is great for children. The artwork is beautiful and very unique. A fabulous children’s book!

Wonderful, touching story teaching caretaking, having active role in the family, gently introducing natural life cycle of death from both the emotional and the objective perspectives.Imagery is realistic and gorgeous. Several pages are in full color from corner to corner. Colors are mostly bright and positive (except for the nighttime pages which lend good contrast). The images say a lot that is not in the text so it provides talking points (for example, they're is no mention of the younger sibling but he is in several imagesPositive ending that still teaches the lesson but leaves you on a positive note.

The media could not be loaded.  This book has my heart. It’s such a tender story about the cycle of life, with themes of empathy and compassion. It’s a fiction story, but also great for discussing life cycles of chickens, feelings/emotions, responsibility, and death. The illustrations are gorgeous! This is a soft cover book, but in a nice sturdy way with great quality.

Initially, I was worried this story was too heavy of a topic for my toddler. However, it is a sweet and gentle introduction to death and the circle of life. The pictures and colors are beautiful, and the story is touching. My daughter loves it, and I personally think it is helpful to have a way to slowly introduce life and death without it being too intense. Definitely recommend.

My hubby and I have three kiddos, ages three five and eight. We also have eight hens and a rooster that the kids are very involved. We recently had a fox attempt to break into our coop which our kids were around for and they had never ending questions about why the fox was trying to get in, what would happen to the chickens if he got in, where he lives, etc. I just so happen to remember hearing a person on tik tok doing reviews on kids books and this one stuck in my brain. I quickly ordered it and now my kids can understand the circle of life in a really gentle way. The books starts off with a little girl who works hard to take care of her chickens, but one day a fox comes and eats one. The dad explains to the little girl that the fox is trying to provide for her babies just like the little girl provides for the chickens. The illustration are amazing and this has easily become one of my favorite stories to read to my kiddos.

A great read with beautiful pictures. Meaningful story line (good for kids and adults) showing the circle of life. Multiracial family is illustrated yet never mentioned, normalizing it. Care of animals, learning about nature, understanding life and death. Many lessons for us all.

We are a bit biased since phoebe is a local author but we love her books. The multicultural characters, the woman drawn in real life shapes and the meaningful stories are perfect. We do change some of the words in this book and the dad being all knowing and strong but I get the intention (we just like to present men and women on a more equal size difference - we are hippies). :) amazing story about life though and the illustrations are perfect.

This sweet book is beautiful and beautifully illustrated. It really seemed to help my 6yo with a fox attack that took most of our flock.

Deals with heavy issues in a human way. We love this book.

Lovely story about Sonya caring for chickens who are killed by foxes. This book is a sensitive exploration of loss, life and death - which are important concepts for children to gain an understanding of in a gentle way.The tendency to shield children from these concepts is not always possible or necessarily desirable - books like Sonya's chickens introduce children to mortality.

Phoebe Wahl who is famous for her artworks, especially on fabrics,created a great story about the circle of life.For pre-school readers and everybody who loves great illustrations (made with a collage technique).
