A staple in the wiccan community
If you're looking for a thorough book on traditional Wicca, look no further. This is not only a classic but a staple in traditional wicked teachings. Everything one needs to navigate entry into the wiccan tradition, as well as its tools, common questions, deities, etc, are addressed. Truly no stone is unturned. I will caution the reader that due to the authors practice of rituals "skyclad", this book does contain nudity. So if that's something that bothers you, this may not be for you. Outside of that, I have nothing but good things to say about this.

I know I didn't rate before, but now, I want to.
I found this book years ago, and I will say, it's excellent for teaching along with the blue book.

This is the BEST book on witches and ancient traditionsIMHO
Been a witch since 10 for sure but never thought much about it til now. I'm studying it more closely to learn the traditions n pageantry that goes with it. I've always had really Kewl powers but just figured everyone has them and then I found out there r powers out there WAY stronger n more intense than mine so I want to grow n learn, become ONE with Nature, the Gaia, n all the living entities here on our magnificent planet, and all the new ones to be.This book so far has everything n more. If I understand, the author runs a coven n his trials, tribulations, n suggestions r the Best. I did not expect to like the book. My "soul" freaked a bit at the black cover ... I prefer to stay away from the Dark Side, has no appeal for me... But I got good vibes from the intro page onward. Truth n honesty n an innocent portrayal of the origins of religion, Wicca, and the Green religions are what lay ahead when you read this time ... You should love it. I recommend it highly to anyone with open mind n the desire to get back to what religion REALLY felt like before it got absorbed by mainstream commercialized religion. Feel what it was like to be in close proximity to the Creator Him/Her self in a time when u could witness firsthand the results of your prayers, in real time. Delivery was perfectly on time, and even though it claimed to be used it looks brand new to me. Very pleased I am.

reflects the path 30 years ago
First read this book when it came out almost 30 years ago and while it was not completely relevant to me, it was good information for someone just starting out; another POV as we now term it. Why am I reviewing this now, when I bought my second copy many years ago? because I was just looking over some the more modern reviews and see comments from people who are younger than the book! Wicca and witches were synonymous then, while they are not so today. Wicca itself has changed - in definition, in scope, in practice - as all religions/faiths should. There are still those who like this very stylized practice, while many of us are more free form. It doesn't make it bad, it just means its different. This is very dated for modern wicca/witchcraft. It IS a reflection of the times in which it was written. it offers ideas that some may want to incorporate in their practice. It is a cool historical perspective. there are things in this book that I was uncomfortable with back then, but that just was part of someone else's practice, it didn't mean it had to be mine. although, this book may have been partially responsible for why I chose a solitary path rather than a group practice! It is unfortunate that people who are looking for something more on Witchcraft are disappointed, but when you are looking for such, please look at things like publication dates. Back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's - Witches and Wicca WERE one. You will see the same in Starhawk's books from that same era. Now we see those who call themselves witches and are followers of Wicca (such as myself) and we see Wiccan's who do not consider themselves witches at all, while we see witches who have no interest in Wicca. But as Starhawk herself said at the time, Witch - as we use it - is derived from Wicca. It is a very loose interpretation for sure. It was also a very "up yours" to the "establishment" at the time too. and we hold it because we want to take people out of their comfort zone. make them think. Make them develop other POV's. Now, we risk categorization in something that isn't who we are; as all the definitions have shifted dramatically.

When it comes to the Farrars...
When it comes to the Farrars, this is one of their best books (or, ought I say, their best two books bound together.) I am normally quite dismissive of a few of their other works, but this does have much to give, even if one is not an Alexandrian, such as myself. One of the more common whingeing by some is that the book is "dated" and "not progressive" .I value the so-called dates books as they act as historical texts. On this score, some fuss pot actually complained about Gardner's "Witchcraft Today". How does one know where s/he is going on such a vehicle when they don't know where it's been? As for being written decades prior to progressive and "wokism", I say, "Thank the Gods!" But, this material * was* progressive for its day. I suppose what it comes down to is that this was my era, therefore, the root of my appreciation and worldview.

Very detailed and complete source on old traditional Wiccan practices
Of note, unlike more modern writings and Wiccan source book. This is a extensive and detailed text book not written for any "entertainment " value. This is pure knowledge of old Wiccan practices. Excellent source to use and adapt for your own use. I've owned multiple copies over the last 30+ years. My original became to delicate to use and I keep giving them away to newer practitioners.
