On the far side of 'Vintage'!
This book is a lovely, lovely collection of vintage crochet designs - a quirky pineapple-shaped (and pineapple coloured!) hot pan stand constructed using crochet over lots of old bottle tops is a most memorable example of this and quite on the far side of vintage! I remember individual paper patterns like this at my mother's home and this book beautifully evokes the patterns of the period between approx the thirties and late 50's. Whether you want to make the patterns or not (and there's a good mix of 'ooh how nice/ooh how outdated' patterns here), it's a great book which serves as an interesting crochet history lesson and as a collection of do-able patterns with charts for the more advanced crocheter. The patterns consist of household items eg dishcloths (hand-sized 3-d pansies and sunflowers!), a few afghans and a number of placemat sets (one set shaped like watermelon slices!)along with more refined lacy doilies and other items. My mother tried to teach me to crochet as a teenager but i wasn't interested and only picked up the basics! Now I'm (a lot) older I have re-learned the craft through the use of dvds ('Crochet in Motion' DVD mainly) and various books, and Jane Crowfoot's Crochet Club. I am also teaching my son and daughter how to crochet too. This is an amazing time for crochet - it is now becoming very popular with many books and patterns newly available, so I would say this is definitely NOT a dying craft. I am pleased to say it is 100% fit and well and ready to face the future with the help of the many new crocheters and pattern-makers who are turning to this most amazing, beautiful craft !!Happy crocheting!

Crochet for the home
Some lovely designs, but also some things you would never consider making.Perhaps to be expected in a dying art form
