GE UltraMax Proline Electronic Ballast, 120/277 Volt Instant Start Ballast, High Power Ballast Factor, Ballast for Fluorescent Light (3) or (4) Lamp T8

This ballast unit was easy to install and works great! It causes the florescent lamps to put out more light (safely). It was made by a very reputable company, and the price is excellent for what it is. In our kitchen, I repaired both sets of 4 bulb lamps with these when the previous ballast units died. Unlike the originals, this product will work with any combination of installed / uninstalled / bad bulbs. Since it makes the bulbs "on" for more of each second (or more precisely, it makes them "on" for more of each 60 Hz sine wave), you get more light out of each bulb than you would with the ballast units that are typically provided in budget-priced florescent lamps. In our case, I intentionally left 1 bulb uninstalled after the repair because the 3 bulbs with this ballast provided about the same amount of light as the 4 bulbs did with the old one. One of the great things about this ballast unit is that if one bulb goes out, the others all keep working -- with cheaply made ballasts a single bad bulb causes the whole unit to quite working. I've already purchased 4 of these and I intend to buy at least that many more.

-1 star for bent tabs. The ballast works perfect and I finally have a lit corner in my shop that I can start organizing. Just had to straighten the tabs with some pliers as this warehouse deal was obviously dropped. I’m using this with LED lights and it’s bright with no noise and works perfectly as it should.

I'm using this high output GE ballast to wring the most lumens out of the two t-8 fluorescent bulbs illuminating my aquarium. (I'm overdriving them 2x with this ballast designed for four bulbs.)It works as advertised, is well constructed, and the wiring diagram printed on it made hooking it up easy. Instant on, no hum, flicker or interference, works with a lamp timer, and bulbs are very brightly lit.But 'high ballast factor' means it tends to run HOT. Be sure to provide adequate air space on all sides of it. I added spacers beneath the ballast to keep it thermally isolated from the mounting surface, and installed a pair of computer fans to ventilate my light fixture.

The ballast is working perfectly in the fixture I built for my aquarium. It runs a bit hot, but I think that's to be expected with a high output ballast.Function is just what you'd expect: it's silent, fires the bulbs instantly and consistently, and has a good wiring diagram. Something strange happened with shipping (I didn't get tracking information, then suddenly USPS delivered it five days early), but I don't think that's the fault of Amazon or the supplier. Overall I feel this is a much better ballast than I would have picked up at a local hardware store, for about the same price, and I'm very happy with the purchase.

Simple 4-lamp high ballast factor (1.18) instant start ballast (30% higher than normal (0.88) when you need additional lumens for the job. Lower crest factor (1.4) improves lamp life. Leads are sufficient for troffer.
