Starting FORTH: Introduction to the FORTH Language and Operating System for Beginners and Professionals

It is a testament to both the author and the book itself that, after all these years, there is yet to be a better book written about the FORTH language.Whilst this book is definately getting a bit a long in the tooth, and the language has moved on in some respects, there is an awful lot in here that is still relevant, even today; I have no doubt this book will prepare the reader fully to begin his first steps with any modern FORTH language.The book starts from first principles, such as the stack, putting numbers on the stack, and then takes you right through the language exploring some very advanced techniques, and even shows you how you can extend the compiler to make your own langauge using FORTH!A brilliant book. Getting pricey these days, but worth every penny.

Starting forth provides and excellent introduction the forth language for some who is new to the language.

One of the many languages I learnt on my Sinclair ZX Spectrum was FORTH. I bought this book at the time and found it perfect for learning a potentially alien language. Having come from Pascal and then C, I found this approach to programming completely different - until I started to program in assember of course. Then I realised that programming in Z80 assembler used similar techinques of manipulating the stack as FORTH. Lisp, Prolog, Smalltalk and FORTH were all very different approaches to programming and most were available on the Spectrum, including Pascal and assembler.I'm returning to FORTH again and reading this book one more time just for fun.

Starting Forth is an all-time computer science classic, informative, humorous and detailed (as far as the language went in 1981). If you need to learn Forth then this book will make it a pleasure, and you can't say that of very many other programming books. If you're about to write a programming textbook then this will teach you a thing or two about how to go about it.It is available as a free legal download on the internet with some modifications, but it just is not the same quality experience as the original printed version.
