I picked this one up for a class last semester. It wasn't written in a style I personally enjoy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is a really well written, entertaining book. It's not surprising that Braddon's works are considered a classic. Much like many early mystery novels the mystery is less in "who did it" than in the details surrounding the situation, so if you're looking for a book that keeps you guessing the "who" until the very end it may not be the best choice, but otherwise it's a very fascinating mystery to unlock as you read along. Happy reading!

Humor, Heart, and Mystery
When I see readers bend to left and rightacross the line of straighter, more bored ones,I like to think that Lady Audleyโs Secret hasbeen there. But novels do not make them stay.Ideas do that. But really, this book doeshave its share of ideas and jokes within. The mystery and intrigue only addto all its lighter, brighter qualities.May not a single reader willfullymisread my words and half-grant what I wish.Lady Audleyโs Secret is the right bookto love: I donโt know where itโs likely togo better. Even when you read this bookagain, the second time or third, youโll findnew points and details that you hadn't seen.It would be good for reading twice or thrice. One could do worse than be a fan of it.

but these are very good.
As this is written in a Victorian style and there are many characters you do have to pay attention. Characters may be referred to in the first chapter that you do not read about again until say the third chapter. That is the type of writing for the period. She is also trying to give additional interepretations, but these are very good.

It's more than a game!
A wonderful novel full of suspense and mystery. It's like you are playing Clue, while reading it. Much better than I originally expected from a novel I had never heard of before! Definitely recommend you to read it!

Absolute sensation novel
This is a read for those that have an appreciation for the sensation novel of the the nineteenth century. And for those not familiar with this genre, this narrative is all the more reason to read it! It has mystery, scandal, melodrama, and elements of the gothic. Fans of Oscar Wilde' s Portrait of Dorian Gray will enjoy this narrative.

Victorian Romp
We live 5 mins walk from the house where this was written and clearly set ... Ingatestone Hall Essex. I loved the book - a fun romp and I could picture exactly where the author was writing about. Love it.

What is Lucy's secret?
Ace sensation fiction! Who is Lucy Audley? What is her secret? Is she a murderess? Did she set fire to the pub? Did she bump off her first husband? Why does her portrait show her looking like a fiend in hell? It's Victorian, it's careful to stay on the right side of the moral issues, but it's a great read. One for a long train journey or a night in if you're a fan of Victorian melodrama.

Fortuan
Avoid this print-to-order edition. Terrible quality with missing or blurred and unreadable pages. Can't even get the author's name right - she published as Mary Elizabeth Braddon, not Maxwell (which was her real married name). Appears to be volume 2 of a three volume set, though this isn't clear until you see the inside title page. I thought I was buying a good quality hardback instead of a cheap paperback. Returning this to Amazon and ordering a cheap (but much better quality) paperback version instead. The story gets excellent five star reviews from those who have read and reviewed elsewhere. I have only given this edition one star because zero is not an option.
