Handmade Soap Book, Updated Second Edition: Easy Soapmaking with Natural Ingredients (IMM Lifestyle Books)

I looked through the book. I love the pictures and the recipes seem to be understandable. I am a hands on learner. Can't wait to make some soap!

Liked newer current Intel on soap making than other books. Using this book for researching side gigs. Very good overall.

2.5 stars. This is a small book that tries to have a little bit of everything, and fine detail in nothing. What it does have: - recipes with a variety of ingredients. Some use animal fat, some are vegan. Some use essential oils, some use fragrance oils. There are recipes with honey and recipes with milk. -Small, vague sections on the basics, possible materials and soap shapes, and choosing scents and colorants. -Detailed lists of oils and their use, a recipe for rebatching soap, a decent essential oil list with potential uses, and a list of natural fillers/texture additives. What it lacks: - there are no scent amounts or ratio ideas for those looking to adapt their own recipe. - The scent and colorant sections are almost not helpful at all. -The recipes are organized by scent, not ingredients. It's a pain to search for ones with no animal fat, or no palm oil, or no fragrance oil. Not to mention all the different materials you'd need to buy to make even a couple of these soaps, since they're all so different. I would not recommend this book, and I'm glad I didn't purchase it (my library did). The internet has better information that's easy to find. I would only recommend this book for someone looking for a collection of varied recipes all in one place, and has no ingredients they are looking to avoid.

I am an experienced soapmaker and got this book for new recipe ideas. There are some beautiful photos of soap however sometimes attempts were made with photographs to make them so artistic (lighting from underneath, soap buried in dried rosebuds) as to not actually allow you to see what the soap looked like. A lot of the photos show dry, crumbly soap which in some cases can mean it was lye heavy. There are some good recipe ideas although I have never considered shortening to be a "natural" soap ingredient nor do I ever consider synthetic fragrance oils to come under the realm of "natural" nor do I consider food dyes to be so. The cucumber soap recipe calls for a preservative but I have never found that necessary in my vegetable or fruit soaps. Tallow is used several times (called "drippings" since the author is from Wales) which in the United States isn't nearly as readily available although i was able to order some online.

A note for anyone buying this book. There is a printing error for the egg and lemon shampoo bar. Its not 253g of sodium hydroxide! its 132g. i repeat its 132g of sodium hydroxide which gives 5% superfat. I spoke to the author and she confirmed it. Otherwise, all is good. i wish she would do a book on creams too. i like her recipes a lot.

Good for extreme basics as it doesn't go into too much detail. I would've liked a bit more info on regulations for use of fragrance oils etc as well as more in depth explanations overall. Treat it as a recipe book rather than a technical book.
